UFC London in SHAMBLES!!

Postby yoseph » Sun Mar 15, 2020 1:44 pm

https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2020/03/ufc-london-card-shambles-relocation-announcement-coronvirus-dana-white

After this past Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 28 event in Brasilia, Brazil, was forced behind closed doors, the promotion now looks ahead to UFC on ESPN+ 29. That event currently does not have a location, venue or expected number of fights.

The card originally was set for The O2 in London in front of a live audience. But U.S. travel restrictions that just were extended to the United Kingdom have derailed those plans. UFC president Dan White announced Saturday night that salvaging the event is of the highest priority, but the issues continue to mount.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani shared an internal memo the UFC sent out to managers in the wake of the situation, essentially opening the door for any fighters – on the UFC roster or not – to volunteer their services for a makeshift event.

Leon Edwards vs. Tyron Woodley
Status: Unknown
Details: No solid word on the planned main event, but with the card seemingly being shifted to the United States, it puts Edwards in a precarious position. The travel restrictions mean Edwards has a decision to make in terms of leaving his homeland, where he was supposed to get the advantage of fighting.

Nicolas Dalby vs. Danny Roberts
Status: Canceled
Details: Roberts confirmed on Instagram a report from MMA journalist Chisanga Malata that his fight with Dalby will not happen.

Kevin Holland vs. Jack Marshman
Status: Canceled
Details: Marshman will not be competing, but the UFC is actively searching for a new opponent to face Holland, as MMA Junkie previously reported.

Darren Stewart vs. Marvin Vettori
Status: Unknown
Details: There’s been no information on the state of Stewart vs. Vettori.

Geraldo de Freitas vs. Jack Shore
Status: Canceled
Details: According to a report from BBC, the matchup between de Freitas and Shore has been scratched.

Marc Diakiese vs. Jai Herbert
Status: Canceled
Details: According to an Instagram post from Diakiese, his matchup with Herbert is off.

Do we think the UFC can survive shutting down like other sports?
MMA as a whole will but what kind of effect would it have on the UFC if they did nothing fur a fee months?
Kinds curious, it'll be interesting to see if any events get out of the states in the next bit.
They announced a Saskatoon card I was gonna go to but Trudummy doubtfully allows that.

I like Edwards and feel he's the product of the development of MMA in the UK
You compare the wave that came before and it's night and day in terms of a sound overall game.
We kind of heralded Bisping as the anomaly Brit with a good wrestling base.
I don't like Woodley, he's essentially black Kop and he's always a victim.
I didn't agree with the way he or the UFC handled his title reign and I hope we never see him in a title fight again.
Hope this card finds a home.

Dana White wrote:My Crew,

This has been a crazy couple of weeks.

We’ve been doing everything possible to stick to our live events schedule because the fighters want to fight, our employees want to work, and the fans want to watch our sport.

So many people have reached out over the past few days to say thanks for not canceling our Brasilia event on Saturday. When weird things happen in the world, or when there’s a tragedy, like the October 1 shooting, people want things to get back to normal, and nothing feels more normal than watching sports.

We did everything we could to relocate our next three events– London, Columbus, and Portland. But every day, there are new restrictions put in place on travel and large public gatherings that are making it impossible to stay on schedule. We can’t even hold an event in Vegas, our home town, because there’s a ban on all combat sports events in Nevada until at least March 25.

As you heard me say, I’ve been in the fight game for 20 years, and this is what we do—we find a way to keep our events going no matter what. If fighters miss weight, if fighters get hurt, or if states won’t regulate us, we figure out a way. But this is different. The whole world is being affected right now, and nothing is more important than the health and safety of you and your families.

That’s why we are closing all UFC offices effective immediately, including HQ in Vegas, through at least March 31st, and asking all employees to work from home. The PI will also be closed to all personnel, including athletes, during this time. The next three events– London, Columbus, and Portland—will be postponed. UFC 249 is still scheduled as planned, but the location may change. We’ll keep you posted.

I tell you guys all the time, you are the BEST TO EVER DO IT. It feels shitty now, but WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS, and we’ll be TOUGHER, STRONGER, AND MORE BADASS than before.

Right now, the number one priority is to take care of yourselves and your family.

Finally, I want you to know that UFC has your back. If you or any member of your family is showing symptoms of coronavirus and you’re having trouble getting to a doctor, please reach out to me, Lawrence, or Hunter.

Thanks.

Dana
