ONE Flyweight and Lightweight GP 2019

Postby Mr Meow » Wed Nov 07, 2018 4:22 pm

ONE Championship announced they will host a Flyweight and Lightweight GP in 2019. Featuring the new signings of Alvarez and Demetrious Johnson.

https://www.onefc.com/articles/one-flyw ... -for-2019/

Below is the initial hype video for it

ONE is yet to announce dates or brackets yet. However the fighters which are implied to participate are featured in the video. ONE said they are open to, and will most likely use, current Flyweight and Lightweight Champs in the GP as well.

Rumored fighters that I saw advertised in the hype video are as follows

Lightweight
Alvarez
Saygid Guysen Arslaniev
Ariel Sexton
Eduard Folayang
Amir Khan (not the boxer you dipshit)
Aoki
Timofey Natsyukhin
Ev Ting

Flyweight
Demetrious Johnson
Karat Ahkmetov
Geje Estaquio
Danny Kingad
Adriano Moraes
Gianni Subba
Yuya Wakumatsu
Reece Mclaren

I for one am excited for this. ONE dipped its toes with a GP of sorts years and years ago. (Jens Pulver lost in the final to Masatatsu Ueda) but abandoned it after.

These brackets are super deep with talent and guys who finish fights. I think a GP is a perfect way to welcome and showcase their new signings.

Thoughts?

Get ready to add more names to that roster from the UFC....

Good call mr sir

ONE and Rizin will snatch up so much of this talent it won't even be funny. A lot of guys will go to ONE to chase DJ as he is the best flyweight in the world and Rizin will attract quite a few to that 132 pound division to fight Horiguchi and not have to cut much weight while doing so.

UFC gives us an entire TUF show of regional flyweight champions to determine who next will fight DJ, then not even sign more than half of them (when they were all easily UFC caliber) and then totally dissolve the division after trading its champion for years and booking a fight with the current champ vs the bantamweight champ

The UFC really leaves a lot to be desired in terms of there long term booking at times. They mishandled it so badly. Never should have been 125 and 135 divisions it just should have been 130 instead.

Asia is a better market for these fighters anyways. They appreciate the technical aspects that a lot of guys at 125 have. While even on linker there is a lot of strange "midget" hate  If I have to hear one more time about how you think you can kick DJ's ass simply because you are bigger than him I swear I will shit in your cereal tomorrow. No you could not motherfucker, you have the same chance at beating Mugsy Boges in a game of 1 on 1 in his prime (5'3 NBA player) as you do at beating DJs ass in a clean fight.

So hopefully a lot of these guys get signed and make some good money. The US market was not handled well but there will always be that weird stigma of "I dont want to watch fighters whose asses i mistakenly think I can kick" even among hardcore mma fans such as us that simply is not a thing over in Asia really.

I want to see DJ vs Adriano Moraes. And Yuya Wakamatsu knock out everyone in the tournament. As well as Eddie Alvarez vs. Saygid in the finals.

Dude same here. I quite like Wakumatsu and I think Saygid is talented enough to make it to the finals. Eddie is a hell of a fighter but his defensive liabilities mixed with how hard and quickly Saygid strikes makes for a potential upset.

Is Aoki Alvarez (assuming the third fight happens) basically the only trilogy series between world class guys in which every fight of the trilogy occurred under the umbrella of a different organization?

Dream
Bellator
ONE

Pretty cool. It is the only trilogy I can think of where each fight was in a different major organization.
