What's your grappling strategy?

Hey, I just now found this part of the forum so I thought I'd make a thread.

What is your strategy when grappling?

For me, I like to play guard. I'm always looking to try and find the submission or the sweep from guard. I don't always try the same tactics but there are somethings that are my "go to" moves. If I do get guard, I immediately start looking for armbars, if I can get one either because the guy is too strong or defending well, I will look for a flower sweep, and look to wind up in mount. from there I have a couple chains I will try, either trying to choke, or to setup an armbar or even a triangle from mount. if It looks like i'm not going to be able to find a sub from mount or if the guy is strong and i'm going to lose mount I will then try to lock up an arm for the gift wrap and transition to the back and work on some chokes from there. if I can't get the rear naked, I use the seatbelt to trap an arm and go for it again, or maybe the bow and arrow choke, or maybe try an armbar again.

That's basically my strategy. I'm decent in other areas too but this is where i'm most comfortable. so, what are some strategies you guys use in matches or even just sparring?

Takedown and lay and pray. Srs. If I end up on my back I try to get back to my feet or grab a leg. This is in competitions only though. Trying to work guard retention in practice more

I want to get to side control. My side control is very strong. Very few can get me off of them. Once I get to side control I have lots of options and there is a good chance that I will submit my opponent.

Side control is probably my weakest area. I'm very good at not letting it get there, but if I do find myself there I'm basically stuck. I can still defend well, but I'm not great at getting out of the position.

What submissions do you usually attempt from there?

so im competing in the grappling games in chicago on friday, and know the guy i'm going up against... it's a 7 minute superfight in the absolute division... i'll be on at roughly 7 pm in oak lawn, IL on 94th street and oak park avenue... would be awesome with someone with a linker tee to come out so i can spot em...here's the kicker.... this year we can slam and reap... this will completely change my strategy because of the fact that the dude i'm up against is like 230 and i'm currently 188... but if i can reap, i'll roll against anyone any size any place anywhere... in the ifbjj tourneys a bunch of people don't want competitors to be able to reap, which i believe takes away from the growth of the sport because all guys in abu dhabi do now is grab your legs and try to break them.... i won't be wearing a gee, so here's my strategy....

The exact same as chess... in chess, you never want to be the first in on an exchange of pieces to begin the game... this is why the etymology of the word "pawn" is so powerful... i'm going to let this guy take me down.... but i swear to you this motherfucker will not pass my guard... if he shoots with his head on my right side, i am immediately going for a guillotine and locking in my hooks... if he goes for a slam, i'm getting both my legs up and one of his arms in, locking in a triangle cause he won't hurt me with the slam unless he gets very lucky... if he shoots on my left hand side, (i have no guillotine on that side; its trash and my shoulder is totally fucked for life) i'm staying in guard and looking to sweep... from there, i guess we'll see.... but no x guard against a big dude ever again... i'm locking in my hooks tight cause last time i tried playing x guard against a monster dude, i got my leg bent almost completely backwards... it sucked

hmm it's funny as a wrestler in highschool and college and competing in N.a.g.a a couple of years ago, I thought it would help me in pure Bjj but I found it's a harder transition into that as opposed from MMA where I always felt like I could take guys down at will. I like to be a bully whizzer to full mount I don't like being in guard or "panic zone" for me.haha
