What techniques did you learn this week?

Punch, jab, and combinations. MMA standup technique. What works for you?

Postby sennin » Mon Dec 03, 2007 4:36 am

First post, I Just started no-gi bjj recently, and have been having a TON of fun.

This week we learned so much stuff I've been struggling to remember it all. I was only able to use one technique in rolling so far, but at least have more of an idea of what to do than last week.

This week was all multi-technique sequences.

1. from bottom, closed guard. Attempt arm-bar, opponent escapes, switch to triangle, opponent escapes, switch to omoplata. (last part took me FOREVER to get for some reason, I had trouble with keeping the wrist controlled while turning and bringing the leg over the shoulder all at the same time.

2. from top, escape arm-bar, slide back, grip around the legs, stack, pass guard, side control, head arm grip.

3. We also did a guard pass from standing, that required waiting until your opponent put his food against your ankle/shin, then stepping over, dropping down, passing guard. I didn't really get it though, and need to practice more before really trying to break it down enough to explain it..

Looking forward to next class, but gotta travel for three weeks. I found a school near where I'm going (Daly City, CA), but am not sure about the whole etiquette thing with dropping by another school for their introductory/single classes.. Has anyone else done this before?

Learning an omoplata in your first lesson? That strikes me as a little quick to learn - It's great to learn a lot of subs, but don't get ahead of yourself. Master the basics before moving on to the crazy moves.
I remember my first BJJ lesson well - we drilled going from sidemout, to sit-out, to mount using a ballerina pass and a high pass. Didn't work on a single submission, but I still use that sidemount>mount technique almost every time I roll because I did my best to master the basic move, and that's a fairly basic move. Keep up with the BJJ classes though! I'm glad to hear your starting up, let us know how it goes and what technique you are working!

PS: I LOVE the omoplata and gogoplata from rubber guard- no one sees it coming for some reason. (even me!)

For real. The omoplata is no begginer move. There is a reason you rarely ever see it in an MMA fight. So, if you managed to get it down with speed I'm impressed sir and keep it up. Who are you training with?

I'm going to Penn Fitness and Training. The actual Jiu-Jitsu school is Nova Uniao, but I think that's for the gi classes only. I've only attended the no-gi stuff so far because I haven't been able to purchase one yet. I'm thinking about trying to pick one up while I'm up here in the mainland for the next few weeks, and possibly attending a class or two while here.

Sennin, if you are going to The City (SF next to Daly City area) then check out Fairtex in downtown SF. They have no-gi JJ classes, I think Saturday mornings are the beginner classes still. I am visiting SF this week so PM me if you want more info. There is usually no problem with visiting a gym when you are traveling, most schools will let you train because it gives them advertising.

That is a great attitude to have. Your training partners are your team mates. If guys are always being used as a practice dummy and leave feeling as if they haven't learned anything then they stop showing up.

Thanks for the info Mr Kreaky Bones! I'll definitely check it out. I walked past the school around the corner from where I'm staying (Charles Gracie BJJ), but it doesn't look like they do no-gi stuff. I'm gonna stop by again when they're open over the next day or so and ask some questions. I'm off this weekend, so I'm definitely gonna try and make it into the city. I'll drop you a pm as well.

I'm working on my jab right now
I'm right handed but I wrestled in high school so I like standing southpaw

I feel like it makes my jab heavier but my cross weaker
