It's a figure of speech queer.

Uhh this is how I feel about the ending of season 3.Spoiler:Wayne conveniently can't remember where he is but doesnt forget where he is whenever he drove to the police station to talk to his son. Or to go to the director's hotel room? lol It is such a crock; so they leave the ending open to interpretation why not just answer the question that was presented of the beginning of the episode. Out of nowhere Wayne has a flash back of his time in Vietnam and him proposing to his wife. The ending was bullshit.
I dont know what it is but the creator just can't recreate the same magic that he made in the first season. The character dynamic between Marty and Rust is much better than any of the seasons. They should stick to a consistent time line where they stay in the present and solve murder or a kidnapping. \
