Looking for tips for my first BJJ Tourney and weight loss

Postby DonVito » Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:37 pm

Im 17 and Im getting ready for my first BJJ tourney, I train at Simrell MMA in PA, and will be going to NAGA North American Grappling Championships November 15th, in Newark NJ, under the Teenager Novice level, which is >6months experience. Ive been doing BJJ around a month and I just wanna go so I can learn and get used to competition, I dont plan on winning 1st place, but I certainly plan on doing good. So Im hoping you guys have some good tips for me. Also, I weigh about 139 right now, I need to make 129 for weigh ins in order to be in a good weight class for me. I have a month so that should be plenty of time to lose some weight naturally and then cut weight the night before, so does anyone have any weight loss tips, and some tips on cutting weight? Thank you in advance guys.

Relax and have fun. It's only your first tourney and there will be plenty of others. Just enjoy it.

Don't get over anxious...

That was my mistake.

If you're not already strict about what you eat, now is the time to start. My friend was doing a strong man competition, so our coach gave him a diet and he lost 30 pounds in a month. He went from 225 to 194.5.

I'm not saying to starve yourself, because that's dumb. It's about eating 5 meals a day, and very little fat intake. Eat a lot of tuna, grilled chicken, rice, green beans, granola, apples, etc. Also, don't eat before going to bed.

Since you only weigh 139 I don't know how much it will help, but it should be better than nothing.

In my first tourney, I was very surprised at the level of intensity of every competitor. Until you first step in to have your match and they get a hold of you, you don't know what its like. I competed in the 170 pound no-gi division, and it was quite an experience. Just have fun, do your best and make friends, you'll also learn lots too.

1. dont be afraid to throw some 'bows and try to pass it off as a crossface.
2. look for flying armars, triangles, and gogo's
3. contrary to popular beliefs rape chokes are submissions
4. if you do get tapped, when the ref stops it jump up in his face like "whu the hell?!? why'd ya stop it?"
5. asian dart (for those who read forrest's book u know what i mean ;D )

if u have never been and dont know what its like check out my channel http://www.youtube.com/user/HALALPIG33#p/u
ill be going on that day too. i would tell you just stay calm dont get over anxious but i think its more important you push the pace and make things happen. even if u lose u dont want to lose because of one takedown only because you both wouldnt engage. thats wats happened to some people i know. you dont want to go to newark, drop 80 bucks and not even have a serious grappling match. one other thing, even if ur in novice dont expect people to be easy, there are a lot of first timers who try to play it safe going novice.

I'd say one of the biggest things I noticed.

The amount of time they give you is VERY short. You do not have the time to sit back and collect. Be moving and be active. You'd be surprised how quickly the round goes.

In novice and begginner you see alot of jumping guillotine attempts so just watch your neck when standing.
