I agree with the few reviews of the film that have said the movie is trying very hard to be like Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy.

I have never seen the King of Comedy so I really can't compare there, on the other hand I have seen Taxi Driver, and it pretty much does everything this movie is trying to do except much better.

The societal narratives on anarchy and chaos are done better by Heath Ledger's Joker in the Dark Knight. For example when the Joker explains to Twoface how society reacts when everything goes according to plan and comments "when a bus full of soldiers die no one blinks an eye, you kill one mayor and everyone starts losing their minds".

While the Nolan movies were grounded in reality, in the sense you would expect all the characters to abide by the laws of physics and characters like Superman wouldn't fit, it was still an exaggerated reality where certain things can be accepted without needing an explanation such as how the Joker manages to plant bombs in hospitals without anyone noticing.

This film is supposed to be even more grounded, yet the Joker is able to do pretty much whatever he wants without any real intervention from any sort of authority.

You would think the Joker character should evade the authorities due to some sort of intelligent planning, something often associated with serial killers, yet there is nothing in the film that indicates the Joker is particular intelligent, and he simply just does things without any real opposition.

The underling theme of classism and social injustice which motivates mass protests is barely touched on and definitely not fleshed out enough to explain why a single act of violence against unknown "rich kids" would trigger all out class warfare.

The positives are the Jokers back story and movies acting...the film itself just isn't that good.

That’s disappointing....
When engaged in combat, the vanquishing of thine enemy can be the warrior's only concern. Suppress all human emotion and compassion. Kill whoever stands in thy way, even if that be Lord God or Buddha himself.

I just saw it tonight... and it was really good. Thought provoking to say the least.

If Bruins and I agree on something...it must be great?

Great acting and a great build up to the final act where he finally becomes the Joker and shoots De Niro in the head on live TV.

Epic.

All the classism and outrage over mental illness and guns have no place in this critique of the movie.

It was simply an outstanding movie.

Right. Both the left and right trying to point out why it's a leftist or right wing movie when it has shades of both. I'm just over here enjoying the movie.
