CHAEL SONNEN: ‘I WANT TO FIGHT CHAEL SONNEN.’
MIDDLEWEIGHT UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has announced that he wants to fight Chael Sonnen. Sonnen made the statement on last night’s Jim Rome show, where he was invited to give a breakdown of the upcoming Jones-Belfort fight.
When asked how he thought the fight would pan out, Sonnen said that ‘no one cares about that fight,’ and that ‘there’s only one fight that the fans want to see and that’s Chael Sonnen fighting Chael Sonnen. Me, versus me.’
A noticeably confused Rome took some time to respond to Sonnen who, according to sources close to the popular Oregonian, sat stony-faced and motionless, while Rome struggled to cobble together a follow-up question.
When asked to clarify exactly what he meant by his remarks, Sonnen launched into a twenty-minute self-aggrandizing diatribe in which he called out a number of fighters from different weight classes, different organizations – as well as different sports, most notably popular tennis star Venus Williams. ‘I’m going to kill her in an alley behind a strip bar.’
It didn’t take long, however, before Sonnen was back to talking about his favorite subject – Chael Sonnen.
‘Look, it doesn’t matter where the fight goes; Chael Sonnen is winning that fight – I can guarantee you that. I can win with my eyes closed.’
When asked how he thought he could win a fight against himself, Sonnen said ‘you know… if it goes to the ground I think I can cause myself a lot of problems.’
Sonnen, bleeding profusely from his ears, outlined his training regime for the possible Sonnen-Sonnen super-fight. ‘I’m four weeks in and ready to go. I walk around at about 195 so I don’t have to cut too much. I don’t think I did a good job with my cut against the Brit (Michael Bisping.) If that Sonnen shows up to fight me – I don’t know what I’m going to do – I could lose. Or win. I’m susceptible to subs so I’ve worked hard on those – I choked myself out a couple of times.’
Rome, who could be heard muttering disparaging remarks under his breath such as ‘nutjob’ and ‘freak,’ made one final attempt to solicit an opinion from Sonnen on the UFC 152 main event:
‘Okay Chael – who takes it – Belfort or Jones?’
‘Look, I was the only one who ever called out Anderson Silva. I fought him twice and I beat him twice,’ said Sonnen, who fought Anderson Silva twice, and lost decisively twice.
The interview, which was slated to last an hour, came to an unscheduled end when Sonnen knocked himself out with a vicious right hook.
