If you do your research, you'll see that you don't need much equipment at all to train at home - I do a lot of training at home, both for fighting and for fitness.
Fitness-wise, I use only a barbell/dumbells and a pullup bar. You can work every muscle in your body with this equipment, and pullups are pretty much the best exercise you can do for your back - a very important muscle group in the fight game. For cardio, you can always go out running, making sure you have a good pair of shoes to prevent injury; you can also buy a jump-rope, which can suprise you how well it works for cardio.
For the fight game, I don't have much. I have a heavy bag in my garage and a Wavemaster XXL in my basement. I'll put in a few 3 minutes rounds from my Bas Rutten MMA workout now and then. What's more important than equipment is to have some training partners of various skill levels. I do a lot of sparring/rolling with a former college wrestler I've known since high school, who happens to be phenomonal at BJJ as well, so I keep learning a lot on the ground from him, and I continue to teach him what I learn from my martial arts school. I also spar with a friend who knows very little, which gives me a chance to work on different skills or more exotic techniques while he still learns a lot. You've got to build up your training partners to get better too!

PS: Regarding equipment - remember, your body is a barbell.

Well, can't really do this at home, but definitely squat. Hardest lift you can do, but don't puss out, it'll really help in every sport and is by far the best way to get ripped legs.

The only great home training tool that I can think of is a jump rope. I'm sure you know the wonders that jumping rope can do for your foot work and cardio.

If you are going to be training in boxing for any length of time you should own your own pair of gloves. That way you know that that funny smell in the glove is your own.

Some people have 12 oz. bag gloves for the heavy bag and a pair of 16 oz. gloves for sparring. Get the 16 oz. gloves first because your can use them for bag work as well. Fairtex gloves are pretty much the industry standard.

Another piece of essential equipment is a mouthguard. Your own mouthguard is very important because without it will end up toothless. :( I see a lot of guys with Shock Doctor mouthguards.

my wrestling mat best purchase ever! 10x10 or 12x12 if you have room, a set of SPRI fitness tubes with sheath and door/ceiling attachments, p90x and p90x+ dvd videos (beachbody.com also there in door pull up bar is awesome and cheap!)-best home workouts and THEY WORK (my eight pack says it all), good cross training sneakers, polar heart rate monitor, accufitness fat track pro digital body fat calipers and a digital body mass scale (I love my weight watchers endorsed conair model),
FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE
I also love weighted gloves and ankle weights for adding more burn to my cardio (twice the calorie burn same time frame=awesome), trx and ab slings, clubbell, for grip some rock climber training grips, a bob bag, thai bag, motorcycle gloves for crawing on all fours (yep its a bitchin workout especially up and down stairs in both directions)a breath resistance trainer, some plyo boxes, a basic bench, and finally a v-max weighted vest.. but

for sparring gear the best is called HIGH GEAR....it's ridiculously perfect!
make a grappling dummy with weighted core for throw simulations do some online research it's out there or if you're rich get a real doll and after your workout get in some extra cardio.

I have a sweet home gym...its true. years it took years of purchases here and there....I'm not done yet. but if someone wants the best stuff that's it man...oh btw: myo tape awesome cheap measuring tool, it's just a fancy measuring tape, but I like how accurate it is.
and matts I did some research and found the best deal out there is Dollamur flexi-roll matts if you let them pick the color you can save a few more bucks....perfect for the home gym just LOVE IT...ground workouts like abs stretching and cardio soooo much better with a real matt. WORTH EVERY PENNY save up and buy one, you won't regret it.

Well if your first starting out you don't need VERY MUCH. Just the basic yet effective equipment. And yeah like a lotta the other guys said you need a intelligent training partner if you can find someone. But if not you can still effectively condition your body.

But as far as equipment goes.

1. I have a pull up/ab/chest tower they are INCREDIBLY inexpensive, and it's very versatile you can do a variety of muscle conditioning with just the one station.

2. Jump Rope/Running Cardio needless to say

3. A decent Muay Thai Heavy Bag as well as MMA gloves/Bag Gloves/Sparring Gloves and Handwraps

4. Hand Weights (5 pounds or more) Shadowboxing with hanbd w8's IS A GREAT POWER TRAINING TECHNIQUE.

5. That's pretty much all you need at first. As you become a better fighter buy more equipment and eventually join a gym. And Boom there you have it.

The best thing you can get is elastic bands. Put two hi caliber hooks in a wall, one at the small of your back, and one near your ankles, run the bands through those and put your hands and feet through them for punching, kicking, and knees. If you want a really effective speed and power workout superset pushups/squats or weights with the band workouts. Nothing else is going to increase your rate of force production like that.

for me: video instructions for orientation, a pair of gloves, skip ropes and punching bags for striking. You could also invite a friend or two so that you can have a quality practice time. Alternate live sparring and grappling dummy. You can go with lighter dummies first like those 75lb submission master for a start. Going directly with those heavy ones would eventually lead to bad technique and most especially injury!
