What was an anticipated rematch between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 161: “Evans vs. Henderson” is now off. The fight card has already been shaken up after the interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao had to pull out of the scheduled main event with Eddie Wineland. This time, “Lil’ Nog” has suffered an injury that forced him to withdraw from his rematch with Rua.
Have no fear, Chael Sonnen is here!
Sonnen is fresh off his first-round TKO loss to Jon “Bones” Jones for the light-heavyweight championship. The former two-time title challenger at middleweight let the MMA world know he was interested in filling the slot. Once Nogueira’s name departed from the 205-pound showdown with Shogun, the Muay Thai striker was in need of an opponent if he wants to put his latest training with famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach to good use. It wasn’t until the man who’s always up for a stiff test took to his Twitter.
The self-proclaimed “American Gangster” has been in a war of words with Wanderlei Silva. That was until the opportunity arose for Sonnen to feature on another pay-per-view, for the co-main event opposite the former champion Rua. Rumors that Rua-Sonnen is a done deal are floating around already. Kevin Iole from Yahoo! Sports released a tweet saying the scrap has yet to be confirmed, but is still in discussion.
Canada, keep your fingers crossed for a compelling co-main event to come to Winnipeg. Nothing has been confirmed by the UFC, but Sonnen vs. Shogun would be a welcome addition to the fight card. Sonnen is the man who took promoting fights and antagonizing his opponent to another level. Will Sonnen attract more fans with his outspoken personality? If he can up the trash talk and try to get under Shogun’s skin, it can surely bring more interest into the possible match up of Brazil vs U.S.A on Canadian soil at UFC 161.
So does Sonnen save the day? Or do the masses decide against using the American Gangster as a reserve for Nogueira?
We’ll find out soon enough. Stay tuned for more on that.
