UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields
UFC 129 is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
The event will be the sixth that the UFC has hosted in Canada and the first in Ontario since it was legalized in the province back in August, 2010. The Toronto event was originally titled UFC 131 by the promotion, but later changed to UFC 129 as its early 2011 schedule started to fall more firmly into place.
It is expected to be the largest UFC event in history. The event will coincide with a two-day UFC Fan Expo at the Direct Energy Centre.
The Event is scheduled to have the UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre defend his belt against the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion (and unbeaten in over 5 years) Jake Shields.
On February 11, 2011 an injury to Thiago Silva was confirmed and it was announced that Matt Hamill was pulled from his UFC 129 bout against Phil Davis to fight Quinton Jackson at UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill.
While Davis was then expected to face Jason Brilz at UFC 129, on February 19, 2011 UFC president Dana White announced that Tito Ortiz has been forced out of the UFC Fight Night 24 main event, and Phil Davis has been tapped as a replacement opponent for Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. MMA Junkie reported on February 21, 2011 that Brilz would stay on the main card of UFC 129 and face Vladimir Matyushenko.
On April 12, 2011, MMA Junkie reported that Brian Foster has been forced to withdraw from a fight with Sean Pierson at when an MRI revealed a brain hemorrhage. No replacement for Foster was named. The following day, UFC officials announced that Jake Ellenberger would replace Foster.
