Mixed Martial Arts Career
Terry Etim began competing in professional mixed martial arts back in 2005, going 9-0 until getting signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Before being signed by the UFC, Etim earned himself the Cage Gladiators Lightweight Championship, defending his title once successfully. His title defense was his last bout before being signed.
UFC Career
Since then Etim trained with PRIDE veteran Luciano Azevedo in Brazil in preparation for his fight with Matt Grice at UFC 70: Nations Collide in Manchester. After an opening flurry that rocked Grice, Etim jumped in with a flying knee that was blocked and caused him to fall to the canvas. From there, Grice worked his ground and pound attack, but once the fight was stood up, Etim turned the tables and locked in a standing guillotine. Etim dragged Grice down to the ground whilst in the guillotine. But this allowed Grice to escape briefly, before Etim got Grice in another guillotine choke. Grice fell unconscious in the choke and referee Steve Mazzagatti halted the fight with 12 seconds left of the opening round.
His next two bouts were not as successful, as Etim lost both of them by unanimous decision. The first loss came at the hands of Gleison Tibau at UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion and the second loss was to Rich Clementi at UFC 84: Ill Will. The two losses were a minor set back, as Etim bounced back with a unanimous decision win over former TKO Lightweight Champion Sam Stout on October 18, 2008 at UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben.
Etim returned February 21, 2009 at UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson against former PFC Lightweight Champion Brian Cobb. He was first scheduled to face off against Justin Buchholz, but a staph infection forced him off the card, where he was replaced by Cobb. A vicious barrage of punches, beginning with a head kick ended the fight at 0:10 of the first round, handing Etim his second win in a row. Working off his two previous wins, Etim won his third straight fight on June 13, 2009 at UFC 99: The Comeback against former ICON Sport Lightweight Champion Justin Buchholz, whom he was expected to face previously, submitting him with a Brabo Choke in the second round.
On November 14, 2009 Etim earned himself the submission of the night honors at UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera, submitting Shannon Gugerty with a Guillotine Choke early in the second round. This was Etim's second submission of the night honors in a row.
