MMA Career
Stephan trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the legendary Carlson Gracie, under whom he received his purple belt before Carlson's passing. This experience has led to most of his bouts ending by way of submission. However, he is also a former Chicago Golden Gloves boxer and has trained in Muay Thai during several trips to Thailand. He is also the Ironheart Crown Light Heavyweight champion and Total Fight Challenge Light Heavyweight champion 2002-04.
The Ultimate Fighter
Bonnar was a contestant on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter. He was coached by Randy Couture. He did extremely well and made his way to the finals against Forrest Griffin.
Due to his strong performance in the light-heavyweight finals, where he lost against Griffin by unanimous decision (29-28), Bonnar was awarded a contract to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship UFC.
UFC Career
After his loss to Griffin, Bonnar became the staple of the regular UFC Ultimate Fight Night shows at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, defeating such notables as Sam Hoger, James Irvin and Keith Jardine before succumbing to Rashad Evans by way of majority decision. More recently, Bonnar lost a unanimous decision against Forrest Griffin in the long-anticipated rematch at UFC 62.
Bonnar was forced to withdraw from his fight against Matt Hamill at UFC Fight Night 13 due to a serious knee injury he suffered during training.
Entrance Music
Bonnar is a fan of the rock band The Who and uses their song "Eminence Front" as his entrance music to UFC matches.
Steroids Controversy
Stephan Bonnar tested positive for an anabolic steroid after his fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 62 on August 26, 2006. The specific banned substance that was found in Bonnar's post-fight urine sample after his unanimous decision loss to Griffin was Boldenone Metabolite, an anabolic steroid developed strictly for veterinary use on horses, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission's drug testing results. During an interview, he claimed the steroids were used to treat an injured elbow, and he believed the substance would be out of his system before his rematch with Forrest Griffin. Bonnar was subsequently issued a 9-month suspension on his fighter's license and was fined $5,000 by the NSAC.
Personal Life
Bonnar is the youngest of three, and he has two older brothers.
When he was a kid he played baseball, basketball, and football. For some reason he wanted to wrestle, which he started when he was 10. A few years later he picked up Taekwondo.
As a young kid, he thought he would be the next Jean-Claude Van Damme. Van Damme was someone new who had come along, who was doing jump kicks and ripping people’s throat’s out, so it inspired Bonnar.
From there he expected to be a physical therapist, until The Ultimate Fighter.
Quotes
Bonnar had this to say about the late Carlson Gracie: “The king of Copacabana, one of the kings of jiu-jitsu and one of my kings. I will always think of him as on a throne. He was a great guy. He died an old man, but he was more jovial and energetic than most younger guys. He was something special.”
He also referred to Dana White was “Pope John of MMA.”
