McGillivray's father was a former amateur boxer, and he initially chose to follow in his father's footsteps. McGillivray, however, began training mixed martial arts. Three months later he had his first amateur fight and today he sports an 11-4-1 professional record.
[edit] The Ultimate Fighter
McGillivray had signed with the UFC in 2011 to compete on the The Ultimate Fighter 13: Team Lesnar vs. Team Dos Santos.
McGillivray was the second pick on Team dos Santos and third overall. Lesnar had selected his number one pick, Len Bentley, to face McGillivray. After a two round war, McGillivray was declared the victor by majority decision, moving him into the quarterfinals.
He made his official UFC debut June 4, 2011 on UFC: The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale card, losing to fellow castmate Shamar Bailey by unanimous decision.
