The Rubber Guard.

The Rubber Guard is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique. This position requires some flexibility to perform but has numerous benefits.

While lying on their back with a person in Full Guard the bottom person pulls their leg up the back, and places it over the shoulders of the top person. They then grasp their own foot with the opposite hand. As a guard position it effectively defends against strikes from the top person by keeping them tight, and controlling their upper body.

In addition to the defense this guard provides the rubber guard also allows offensive options. From the rubber guard you can strike effectively from the bottom with both punches and elbows. You can also transitions into a beautiful submission called the gogoplata.

Transition into the Gogoplata

The gogoplata choke, is performed from the rubber guard by pulling the leg on top of the shoulders over the opponents head and using the shin to choke your opponent.

Example

This was seen in PRIDE 33 when Nick Diaz successful used a rubber guard and transitioned into the gogoplata to choke out Takanori Gomi for a submission victory. If you are at all interested in this technique this is a must see fight.
