Biography
Ross Pointon is from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire where he also owns and operates The Gladiator Gym. Pointon teaches San Shou as well as Mixed Martial Arts. Pointon is single and has one daughter.
Martial Arts Background and Training Regimen
Pointon currently holds a black belt in Kickboxing and has been training in martial arts for seven years. He is a two-time British San Shou champion. Pointon and his fellow countryman Michael Bisping are the first European competitors on The Ultimate Fighter, where he was chosen from an open casting call. Ross recently took a seminar at Bai Lang MMA Academy in England.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Pointon's professional mixed martial arts career began in 2004. His career started on an up-note, going 3-0 in his first three bouts, before losing his first bout at the hands of Dutch striker Valentijn Overeem. After losing to Overeem, Pointon lost his next four bouts, making his losing streak five bouts in a row. After not winning a single bout since 2004, Pointon defeated Jerome Laulan on October 1, 2005, submitting him with a Rear Naked Choke at 0:36 of the first round.
Though his career stood at a meager 4-5, Pointon was given a title shot against Michael Bisping and his Cage Rage Light Heavyweight Championship. At only 2:00 of the first round, Bisping submitted Pointon with an Armbar.
The Ultimate Fighter
Pointon then took part in The Ultimate Fighter 3, where he was a Middleweight contestant on Ken Shamrock's team. He was defeated by eventual Middleweight Tournament winner Kendall Grove. Once Matt Hamill was forced out of his Light Heavyweight, Pointon replaced him, although he had been on the show as a Middleweight. He ended up facing Michael Bisping, whom he actually had recently lost to back in Cage Rage. Once again, Bisping defeated Pointon, this time submitting his opponent due to strikes. Losing to Bisping meant Pointon lost to both eventual winners, in both the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight tournaments.
UFC Career
Though he lost both bouts while on The Ultimate Fighter 3, Pointon was given a chance to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He debuted for the promotion on The Ultimate Fighter 3 Finale on June 24, 2006 against Rory Singer in a Middleweight match-up. Singer submitted Pointon with a Triangle Choke at only 0:44 of the first round.
He then dropped down a weight class, competing as a Welterweight for his next bout, against Rich Clementi on January 25, 2007 at UFC Fight Night 8: Evans vs. Salmon. He was submitted in his second outing in the UFC, this time by a Rear Naked Choke in the second round. After the second consecutive loss, Pointon was released from the UFC's talent roster.
Post-UFC
Pointon returned to England after being released by the UFC, dropping another weight class to face reigning Cage Rage British Lightweight Champion Abdul Mohamed on December 1, 2007. Pointon was KO'd by a spinning back fist at 3:20 of the first round. Returning to Cage Rage for his next bout, Pointon faced Dean Bray, finally getting a notch in the win column, submitting his opponent with a Guillotine Choke in the second round.
Back in the Welterweight division, Pointon returned at CR 24: Feel the Pain to face off against future DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis, who forced a doctor's stoppage in the second round.
On May 10, 2008, Pointon faced off against Ross Mason at another Cage Rage event. He earned his sixth career win by submitting his opponent with a Heel Hook in the first round.
