Mixed Martial Arts Career
Pat Runez began competing in mixed martial arts in 2008. A member of Arizona Combat Sports, training alongside the likes of Jamie Varner, Carlos Condit, CB Dollaway, and Ryan Bader, Runez took his first fight under the banner of the Palace Fighting Championship. His mixed martial arts debut took place on November 20, 2008 against Luis Gonzalez. Runez defeated Gonzalez via unanimous decision.
His next fight was for the vacant PFC Flyweight title belt, against Anthony Perales at PFC 13: Validation. Runez submitted his opponent with a Rear Naked Choke at 2:28 of the second round to earn the title.
All the PFC events took place at Taachi Palace and Casino, until the promoter had a falling out with the Casino owners, ending with the closing of the promotion, making Runez the promotions last Flyweight Champion.
Runez was then scheduled to fight for the vacant UWC Flyweight Championship against TapouT show veteran and Greg Jackson trained John Dodson. WEC Lightweight Champion, Jamie Varner cornered Runez in his title fight. The two battled it out for five rounds, with Runez coming out the victor of a split decision.
- “As long as UWC keeps bringing in quality opponents like John Dodson," said Runez, "I’ll be ready to come back and defend the belt.”
