Martial Arts Career

Early Career

Barry started training professionally at the age of 21 when he was junior sociology major at LSU when he walked into Russell Jones's Kickboxing Gym in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He made his pro debut on November 2, 2002 at the U.S. Open International Martial Arts championships, winning the national title in Sanshou over Robert Parham. Then he left Russell's gym and pursued kickboxing full time with Master Shawn Liu at LIU International in New Orleans. A year later Barry participated at Kung-fu World Championships in China, winning a silver medal.

Sanshou Career

In June 2003, Barry fought in the USASKF Art of War II Sanshou Professional Fights in Atlanta, GA. He won both a US National Sanshou Team Spot and a World Title by knocking out Paul Gurevidius. In November 2003, as a US National Team member Barry participated at the Wushu Kung-fu World Championships in Macau, China, winning a silver medal. In December 2004, he won the K. Superstar Title in New Orleans. From 2002 through 2008, he visited China four times with his Coach Shawn Liu and competed in one of Shandong’s stadiums and trained with Chinese national Sanshou Team at the Shaolin Temple.

He also participated in “Journey to the East” documentary filmed in China and was named by the Shaolin Temple Masters as the True Shaolin Warrior of the west.

Debut in K-1

In 2004 he took part of K-1 tryouts held in Las Vegas, Nevada and made his K-1 debut on April 30, 2005 at K-1 World Grand Prix 2005 in Las Vegas, losing by split decision to Scott Lighty. Barry tragically lost a grandmother and his family home when Hurricane Katrina hit his native New Orleans in 2005.

In 2006 Barry moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands to train with four time K-1 World Champion Ernesto Hoost. In 2007 he participated in two K-1 World GP tournaments held in Honolulu, Hawaii and Las Vegas, Nevada.

WCL Career

In May 2008 he made his World Combat League debut in the 235 lb (107 kg) weight class fighting for the New York Clash. He fought four fights with a total record of 3-1 in the heavyweight division and fought with the team through the championships.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Barry made his MMA debut on May 30, 2008 with the Combat USA organization. Whilst there he fought 3 times over 4 months, winning two fights via TKO with leg kicks, and the other fight by KO, ending each of the bouts in the first round.

UFC Career

On December 27, 2008, Barry made his successful debut in the UFC against Dan Evensen, at UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008, injuring the Norwegian's left knee with a brutal right low kick (the 3rd such kick of the round) at 2:36 of Round 1. Barry lost to UFC newcomer Tim Hague via submission at UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida. His next fight was against Antoni Hardonk on October 24, 2009 at UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun. Barry won by second round TKO. After weathering several leg kicks in the first round from Hardonk, Barry found his range in the second round with fast jab combinations, hurting Hardonk several times before dropping him, following up with strikes to finish the fight at 2:30 of round 2 for a TKO victory.

Barry earned Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night honors at UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun. The event earned him $120,000. In an interview, Barry said he was broke, lived on ketchup and rice, and was about to be evicted in six days. Despite heavy financial burden, this fight was personal for Barry as he was fighting a member of Ernesto Hoost's camp. Barry claimed that Hoost, a former K-1 champion, gave up on him, resulting in a falling-out between the two. Barry also said that he waited five years for validation and finally got it when he defeated Antoni Hardonk.

In late-January 2010 it was rumored that Barry would return to action to face off against another Dutch striker in Gilbert Yvel, but the bout never materialized, as he was scheduled to fight Mirko Filipovic on June 12, 2010 at UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin. After being knocked twice to the canvas in the first round by Barry's strikes, Filipovic won the second round after he started opening up with more effective boxing and kicks. The third round saw Mirko open up with a head kick followed by an axe kick to Pat's head. "Cro Cop" ended the fight with a strong flurry, dropping Barry against the cage where he continued his assault with numerous punches to the face. He then took his back and defeated a worn-out Barry by Rear Naked Choke with no hooks, earning him Submission of the Night Honors.
