The Ultimate Fighter
Matt Riddle was a Middleweight contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 7, where he was trained by former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson.
Matt Riddle first fought Dan Simmler an understudy of Matt Serra. Riddle knocked out Simmler in the opening of the second round and struck him three times in the jaw after he had lost consciousness, breaking Simmler's jaw in two places. It was called the biggest knock out in The Ultimate Fighter history by Dana White and the knock out of the century by Quinton Jackson. Riddle was picked second for team Rampage.
A few weeks into training with Riddle, Rampage notices that Riddle is always smiling so Rampage gave him the nickname Chipper. In the fourth episode of the show Matt Riddle started to trash talk Dante Rivera, a competitor for Team Forest. Dante started telling Riddle that he was going to request to Forest Griffin the fight of Riddle vs. Rivera. Dante then told Riddle that he wouldn't even make it past the first round, and he would bet the sum of 500 dollars. On the day to pick the fight Team Forest made the decision to put Riddle up against Tim Credeur instead of Dante. Credeur defeated Matt Riddle by an Armbar in the second round, knocking Riddle out of the tournament. After the fight Credeur bought Riddle a Xbox with his earnings.
Ultimate Fighting Championship Career
Matt Riddle made his UFC debut by defeated Dante Rivera at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale. The judges scored the fight (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).
Riddle was scheduled to fight Ryan Thomas at UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar, but a knee injury has forced Riddle out of the fight. Recovery for the knee injury is scheduled to take 6–8 weeks. Riddle instead fought and defeated Steve Bruno at UFC Fight Night 17: Lauzon vs. Stephens, where he won by unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Riddle was then scheduled to fight his former The Ultimate Fighter 7 cast mate Dan Cramer. The fight took place at UFC 101: Declaration, on the under card. Riddle won his third professional fight, winning a unanimous decision.
On November 14, 2009 at UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera, Riddle was handed his fist career loss at the hands of Nick Osipczak, who defeated him via TKO (Punches) in the second round.
He later returned to action on March 27, 2010 at UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy, which took place in Newark, New Jersey. First he was expected to face Ricardo Funch, but he was replaced by Greg Soto, a New Jersey native. Riddle dominated the early going, and Soto was rocked in the opening frame after absorbing damage in the Thai clinch. Riddle attacked strongly in the second, as well, and Soto absorbed several blows while working from the guard. As the third round opened, Soto was in desperate need of a finish. Unfortunately, the finish came by way of an illegal upkick to a kneeling Riddle, that rattled him, and forced the fight to be stopped. Riddle went on to win the fight by Disqualification, due to the illegal kick.
Riddle returned to action at UFC Live 2: Jones vs. Matyushenko, where he faced The Ultimate Fighter 9 runner-up DaMarques Johnson in a Catchweight affair of 172 lbs, as Johnson failed to make weight, surrendering 20% of his purse to Riddle. Riddle used his superior Wrestling to take his opponent to the mat, gain dominant position, and use his ground and pound. In the second round Riddle once again gained top position and was able to reign down enough unanswered shots to earn the win by TKO (Punches).
