Mixed Martial Arts Career
Early Career
Marlon Sandro made his professional mixed martial arts debut as part of a one-night four man tournament put on by the Arena Combat Cup on November 6, 2004. In his official MMA debut he defeated Tatu Nunes via rear naked choke in the first round and later than night he submitted Caca Lima via triangle choke to take the tournament.
Sandro's next seven fights came in Brazil with the majority of the bouts coming in the Brazilian branch of Shooto. Sandro defeated all seven opponents to push his record to an unblemished 9-0.
The undefeated start to his career earned him a call up to the Japanese Pancrase organization. He made his Pancrase debut at Pancrase: Rising 9 against future DREAM competitor, Daiki Hata. Sandro defeated Hata via unanimous decision after three rounds.
Four months later, Sandro knocked Miki Shida cold at another Pancrase event with a flying knee and follow up punches.
The impressive start to his Pancrase career earned Sandro a shot for the vacant featherweight King of Pancrase title at Pancrase: Shining 9 against Masaya Takita. The bout took place on October 26, 2008 and saw Sandro claim the title with a unanimous decision after three rounds.
Sengoku
In early 2009, Sandro was announced as one of 16 Featherweight (143 lbs.) competitors for Japan based, Sengoku's 16-man featherweight tournament.
He faced off against King of the Cage (KOTC) veteran, Matt Jaggers in the opening round at Sengoku: Seventh Battle. Sandro used his suffocating top control early as he grinded out the first round convincingly. It looked to be the same story in the second as Sandro began working his ground game. Jaggers desperately tried to get to his feet and managed to do so as Sandro worked an arm triangle choke. When the two returned to the feet, Sandro locked on the choke in the ring corner. Jaggers refused to tap and eventually lost consciousness giving Sandro the technical submission victory.
Sandro next faced off against King of the Cage Canada Bantamweight Champion, Nick Denis in the quarter finals of the tournament at Sengoku: Eighth Battle on May 2, 2009. At only 19 seconds of the first round, Sandro ended the fight by KO (Punches), moving on to the Semi-finals of the tournament. In the semi-finals, Sandro faced Michihiro Omigawa, who beat L.C. Davis and Nam Phan to make his way into the semi-finals. The bout went to the judges score cards and it was a very closely contested affair. The scores were 30-30, 30-30, 30-29 Sandro (i.e. majority draw), but the judges with draws selected Omigawa in a "must decide" decision, giving him the "must decide split decision" 2-1, handing Sandro his first career loss.
He returned to action at Sengoku: Eleventh Battle on November 7, 2009, where he faced off against Yuji Hoshino. Sandro ended the fight early in the first due to KO (Punches). He returned at Sengoku: Twelfth Battle in 2010, where he once again ended the fight by KO (Punch) at only 9 seconds over Tomonari Kanomata.
The impressive victories since the controversial loss to Michihiro Omigawa, Sandro earned a shot at Masanori Kanehara for the Sengoku Featherweight title. Sandro only needed 38 seconds to end the fight by way of KO (Punch), to earn the Featherweight strap.
