Mixed Martial Arts Career

Rockhold began competing in mixed martial arts in 2007, fighting his first two fights in a smaller regional promotion. He won his first professional fight with an armbar in the first round, and suffered his first career loss in his second bout, losing via TKO.

After going 1-1 in the smaller organization, Rockhold was picked up by Strikeforce for their Young Guns 2 card on February 1, 2008. In his Strikeforce debut he took on Strikeforce veteran Josh Neal. He submitted Neal at 1:49 of the first round. He would return to fight once more in 2008 to face Nik Theotikos, whom Rockhold defeated with a rear naked choke in the first round.

Rockhold was next featured on the undercard of Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz against Team Quest trained Buck Meredith. With less than a minute left in the first round, Rockhold submitted his opponent with a rear naked choke, earning himself his third straight victory. He would improve his win-streak to 4-0 with a thirty second submission via rear naked choke over Corey Devela at ShoMMA 2. The fight was also Rockhold's third straight win via rear naked choke, and his fourth straight win to occur in the first round.

Rockhold faced former The Ultimate Fighter alumni Jesse Taylor, who was coming of a high-profile loss to Jay Hieron. The bout took place on November 6, 2009 at ShoMMA 4: Evangelista vs. Gurgel. Luke won the fight via Rear Naked Choke in the first round.

It was announced late-January 2010 that Rockhold would return to action at ShoMMA 6: Prangley vs. Amoussou, where he faced off against another The Ultimate Fighter alumni, in Paul Bradley. Utilizing a sizable reach advantage, Rockhold threatened early with crisp high kicks, and his counterpunches left Bradley on the canvas twice in the opening frame. To his credit, Bradley was able to return to his feet and stay out of trouble. Confident on his feet, Rockhold delivered a final series of three knees to the body of a wobbly Bradley, and the fight was halted just before the halfway mark of the opening frame as his Bradley fell to the floor a final time.
