Mixed Martial Arts Career
Amateur Career
Neer began fighting in the MMA in 2002 at the Toad Holler Fight Club where he started and finished his amateur career and went 11-0. Neer won 4 of the bouts by KO and 4 by submission. Neer would then enter MMA professionally. Even though that is all his record shows he was actually 87-1 at Toad Holler Fight Club sometimes fighting two to three times a night. His only loss as an amateur was to Kevin Burns of the Des Moines Jiu Jitsu Academy.
Professional Career
Neer began his professional career on March 15, 2003 by knocking out Josh Kennedy. Neer then won twice and drew once before losing his first fight to Spencer Fisher by split decision. After losing to Fisher, Neer won his next ten fights, including the XKK (Xtreme Kage Kombat) Welterweight Championship.
Neer signed with the UFC and lost his first fight to Drew Fickett by submission at the inaugural Ultimate Fight Night. Neer fought his next three fights outside the UFC and went 2-1 before going back to the UFC. He submitted Melvin Guillard at Ultimate Fight Night 2 and beat Joe Stevenson, who won the Welterweight division of The Ultimate Fighter 2 at Ultimate Fight Night 3. Neer then lost his next two fights, to Josh Burkman at UFC 61, and by submission to Nick Diaz at UFC 62. Again out of the UFC, Neer went 6-1 in his next seven fights before returning to defeat Din Thomas at UFC Fight Night 13: Florian vs. Lauzon. He lost to Nathan Diaz in the main event at UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs Neer, but followed that defeat with a win at UFC Fight Night 17: Lauzon vs. Stephens over The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs Team Serra winner, Mac Danzig, by triangle choke in the second round.
He then lost a unanimous decision to Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101: Declaration on August 8, 2009. Neer replaced an injured Sean Sherk to fight Gleison Tibau on October 24, 2009 at UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun, once again losing a unanimous decision. Tibau failed to make weight, weighing in at 157 lbs, only 2 lbs. over the weight limit, forcing him to hand Neer 20% of his purse. After the second consecutive loss, Neer was released by the UFC.
Post UFC
In his first fight since leaving the UFC, Neer faced off against Matt Delanoit on January 8, 2010 at Max Fights DM: Ballroom Brawl 4. He won a quick TKO (Punches) victory, in the first round.
It was announced mid-January 2010 that Neer would next fight in a Shark Fights event, where he would face against Anselmo Martinez for the promotion's Interim Welterweight Championship. Neer was a replacement for Ryan Ford, who was forced out of the fight due to an unexpected death in the family. The winner of the bout would claim the promotion's interim welterweight title, and would later face Shark Fights current welterweight champion, TJ Waldburger, for the official title. Neer only needed part of the first round to submit his opponent with a Rear Naked Choke to win the title.
It was announced in February of 2010 that Neer would return to action in May 2010, where he will face off against current Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez in a non-title "Super-Fight" under the Bellator banner. Bellator planned on utilizing its first-season champions in "non-tournament, non-title catchweight" fights as they wait for new contenders to emerge from the season two tournaments. Under these circumstances, the bout took place at a catchweight of 160 lbs. The fight occurred at Bellator 17 and Alvarez took Neer down frequently in the opening frame and delivered punishment from top position. When Neer proved unwilling to go to the canvas in the second round, Alvarez locked in a Rear Naked Choke from a standing position and followed his opponent to the floor as he fell victim to the hold. The bout was stopped at 2:08 of the second round.
Neer's next fight took place on August 14, 2010 at the inaugural Fight Me MMA event, where he faced off against Jesse Finney in a Catchweight bout of 175 lbs. Neer easily scored takedowns and secured the mount position on his overmatched opponent. And late in the round, he ultimately forced Finney to tap out via Guillotine Choke.
Drunk Driving
On New Year's Day January 1, 2009, Neer was arrested by the Des Moines police and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated", hit-and-run, eluding police and other traffic violations.
