Martial Arts Background

Miller began training in mixed martial arts in 2005, when he began training at Planet Jiu-Jitsu with his brother Dan Miller. He entered into the sport with a background in wrestling. Miller competed in wrestling in high school at Sparta High School in Sparta, New Jersey as well as one year of collegiate wrestling at Virginia Tech.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Reality Fighting

Miller had his first professional fight November 19, 2005 against Eddie Fyvie at Reality Fighting 10. Miller controlled the fight and earned a unanimous decision. Miller earned two more victories with Reality Fighting, with a Rear Naked Choke victory over Kevin Roddy and an Arm Triangle Choke victory over Joe Andujar. The quick victories earned Miller a title shot, and he cut down a weigh to fight Mushin Corrbrey for the Featherweight Title.

Miller mounted Corrbrey in the second round and punched his opponent before securing an arm for the Armbar victory. At Reality Fighting 14 Miller took on Frank Edgar for the Lightweight Title. Edgar controlled the fight, but Miller secured a tight Guillotine Choke late in the final round. Edgar fought through the choke to earn the unanimous decision and maintain his title.

In the weeks prior to Reality Fighting 14, Planet Jiu-Jitsu closed down. Miller began training at American Martial Arts in Whippany, New Jersey with his brother Dan in January, 2007.

Cage Fury Fighting Championships

Miller debuted with the Cage Fury Fighting Championships in a Lightweight title fight April 13, 2007 against Evo's Al Buck. Jim fought on the same card as his brother for the first time since Reality Fighting XII, and both were victorious. Miller and Buck squared off, but were forced to separate early after an accidental knee to Buck's groin. When the fight resumed, Miller began working for a takedown, and after escaping an attempted guillotine, secured a slam, from which he quickly attained the mount and then back, sinking in a Rear Naked Choke for the win.

Miller defended his title for the first time at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5 against Atlantic City MMA's Anthony Morrison, an event which featured the much-hyped fight between Kimbo Slice and Ray Mercer. Morrison delivered some big slams early, but Miller worked through a chain of submissions before securing the victory by Triangle Choke at 4:56 of the first round to retain his title.

Miller's second defense was scheduled for the Cage Fury Fighting Championships 6 card, where he was to face King of the Cage Champion Clay French, but the event was canceled a week prior to the event, when a primary investor dropped out.

UFC Career

On July 23, 2008, it was announced that the UFC had signed both Dan Miller and his brother Jim Miller each to four fight contracts. Miller's first bout in the UFC took place at UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben against David Baron, submitting him with a Rear Naked Choke, winning the Submission of the Night Honors. He earned a Fight Night award again in his next bout against Matt Wiman, winning the Fight of the Night Honors in a hard fought unanimous decision victory.

Miller suffered his first loss in the UFC to fast-rising Lightweight Gray Maynard at UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine, losing a unanimous decision. Miller would bounce back at UFC 100, taking on The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner Mac Danzig, defeating him via unanimous decision.

His next bout took place on September 19, 2009 at UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort against UFC new-comer Steve Lopez. The fight was a back and forth battle, until Lopez's shoulder popped out, ending the bout, earning a victory for Miller via TKO (Shoulder Injury).

Miller was scheduled to return to face off against Tyson Griffin on January 2, 2010 at UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva. Griffin was forced off the event in December 2009, and was replaced by former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk who was already scheduled to fight on the card, but originally on the undercard against Rafaello Oliveira. Then to add to the injuries plaguing the card, it was learned on December 16, 2009 that Sherk had been injured during training and would no longer be able to face Miller. Sherk would be replaced by a veteran of the sport in Duane Ludwig. After trading blows early in the first round, Miller finally connected on a right hand that sent his opponent careening to the mat. He followed Ludwig to the canvas, delivered additional punches, moved into mount, and then forced the tap-out with a textbook Armbar submission.

He returned to action on March 27, 2010 at UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy in Newark, New Jersey, where he faced off against Mark Bocek. Both fighters put on a submission fighting clinic, but neither could end the fight. The fight went to the judges score cards, and it could have easily gone either way, but it was Miller that walked away with the Decision (Unanimous), with the judges scoring 29-28 on all three cards.

Miller's next opponent was Gleison Tibau on September 15, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 22. Both fighters entered the bout just a win or two away from top-contender status, but Miller pushed the pace, got the edge striking (especially with a second-round straight left that wobbled Tibau) and largely avoided his opponent's takedown attempts to pick up the Decision (Unanimous) victory via scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28. At this point in his career, Miller has only lost twice, one loss to Frankie Edgar, who at the time of this fight was the current UFC Lightweight Champion, and the second loss to Gray Maynard, who at the time was the #1 contender for Edgar's title.

Personal Life

Jim got married in 2008.
