Biography

Hieron, a state wrestling champion at Freeport (N.Y.) High School and national Junior College Champion at Nassau (N.Y.) Community College, where he earned an Associates Degree, Hieron later attended Hofstra University. Before his senior year at Hofstra University, he tested positive for marijuana, and was unable to wrestle his senior year.

After being kicked off the wrestling team at Hofstra University, he began dealing drugs before being charged with a felony. He turned to Boxing to let his aggressions out on the bags. Finding this to be a strong stress-reliever, and with the encouragement of some friends who trained in MMA, Hieron combined his wrestling skills and burgeoning boxing prowess into a professional MMA career.

Hieron married, moved to Las Vegas, where he has lived since 2004, and now trains full-time as a member of Xtreme Couture. In March 2006, he won the Lockdown in Paradise in Lahaina, Hawaii, and in June 2006 won his IFL debut at the IFL Team Championships in Atlantic City, N.J.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Hieron entered the professional mixed martial arts world, earning four-straight fights, the first three fights ending early on in the first round. He was picked up by the UFC in 2004, where he faced future UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. He was defeated at 1:42 in the first round by St. Pierre by TKO (Punches).

After the loss to St. Pierre, Hieron left the UFC, earning three straight victories, earning himself another shot in the UFC, that took place on October 3, 2005 against another Canadian opponent, Jonathan Goulet. Hieron suffered his second career loss, and second loss in the UFC, at due to a cut early on in the third round.

Hieron bounced back with a 55 second TKO victory in a Titan FC event, before making his debut with the International Fight League (IFL), which became his home for two straight years. He fought for Bas Rutten's Team Anaconda.

Hieron defeated Delson Heleno on December 29, 2007 to become the first-ever IFL Welterweight Champion. He defended his title successfully in his next bout against Mark Miller before the promotion went under.

Affliction/Strikeforce

Following the demise of the International Fight League (IFL) due to financial concerns, Hieron signed with Affliction in August 2008. His debut with the promotion was against fellow wrestler Jason High. In impressive fashion, Hieron landed a perfect right hook, knocking his opponent out cold at 1:04 of the first round. The bout was not featured on the Affliction: Day of Reckoning Pay-Per-View, but on HDnet.

Heiron was then expected to fight Paul Daley at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1, 2009, but the event was cancelled when Josh Barnett, who was expected to fight WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko, tested positive for anabolic steroids, and according to Tom Atencio, they just "didn't have enough time to promote a new fight to our standards.” Three days later, Hieron signed with Strikeforce, where he was scheduled to replace Joe Riggs in the vacant Strikeforce Welterweight title fight with Nick Diaz, that is until Diaz failed to show up for a pre-fight drug test. Hieron was then set to have a replacement of his own in The Ultimate Fighter alum Jesse Taylor, where the title was no longer on the line. Hieron won a hard fought three round unanimous decision.

Hieron was next scheduled to face off against Joe Riggs on January 30, 2010 at Strikeforce: Miami. The winner was most likely going to earn themselves a title shot at the winner of the Nick Diaz and Marius Zaromskis Welterweight title fight that took place on the same event, which Diaz won an impressive fight. The bout was featured on EASportsMMA.com's live stream and Hieron went on to win a very one-sided Decision (Unanimous), which he won with his signature ground-and-pound.
