Mixed Martial Arts Career
Jason Brilz began his career as a high-school wrestler, winning the state championship of Nebraska. He continued to be a four-year letterman in college, at the University of Nebraska, eventually making his MMA debut in 2000. He had been in various talks with the UFC throughout the years, but he finally secured his debut deal to fight in his native Omaha, Nebraska, at UFC Fight Night 15: Diaz vs. Neer.
Originally, he was rumored to fight Thales Leites at, but ended up fighting Australian Brad Morris, defeating him via TKO (Punches) in the second round. He next appeared on the UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine preliminary card, fighting Tim Boetsch. The fight went to the judges, where Brilz ended up winning the unanimous decision.
Brilz returned at UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort against Eliot Marshall, a The Ultimate Fighter alum. Marshall handed Brilz his second career loss, defeating him via unanimous decision. He next came back to action at UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones on March 21, 2010, where he faced off against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Eric Schafer. He went on to defeat his opponent in a split decision.
When Forrest Griffin pulled out of his UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans bout against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Brilz stepped in as his replacement. Brilz never really faced trouble until the third round, when his gas tank started to fade and Nogueira began taking dominant ground positions. However, the PRIDE veteran's many submission attempts couldn't corral Brilz, and the fight went to the judges. The verdict was a split decision in favor of Nogueira, which was met with numerous boos and continued chants of "bull [expletive]!" The fight went on to win the Fight of the Night Honors.
