== Mixed Martial Arts Career ==
=== The Ultimate Fighter ===
McSweeney was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 10 Heavyweights fighting alongside Team Rashad. McSweeney was the first overall pick and fought on the second episode of the show against Wes Shivers defeating him via Decision (Majority).

McSweeney moved on to the next round of the tournament, fighting teammate Matt Mitrione. Mcsweeney won via Guillotine Choke in the first round. Finally, in the semi-finals, McSweeney lost against Roy Nelson via TKO, who went on to win the show.

=== UFC Career ===
James was given another chance by the UFC despite losing on The Ultimate Fighter. He fought Darrill Schoonover on December 5, 2009 on The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale card in Las Vegas. McSweeney, fighting a fellow Team Rashad fighter, was gassed after winning the first two rounds, but a late flurry of knees and punches forced the TKO stoppage at 3:20 of the final frame.

McSweeney returned to action on June 19, 2010 at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale, where he faced off against undefeated UFC newcomer Travis Browne. Browne remained patient and found his opening midway through the first round, when he used a body kick to set up a big left punch that dropped McSweeney. Browne followed his opponent to the mat, moved from side control to the mount position, and then rained down a barrage of punches to force the TKO (Punches) stoppage at the 4:32 mark of the opening frame.

McSweeney and his camp attempted to get the decision overturned for the TKO loss at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale, as his camp believed the loss occurred because of illegal elbows to the back of the head that led to him losing the fight.

After the loss, McSweeney announced that he would compete his next fight at Light Heavyweight.
