Mixed Martial Arts Career

International Fight League

Jake made his debut for the IFL losing to Jay Hieron. For Jake's second fight, he beat Ben Uker at the IFL: Championship Final and then lost his third IFL fight at the IFL: 2007 Team Championship Final. In his last fight for the promotion, Jake dominated his opponent, Pat Healy at IFL: Las Vegas.

Bodog Fight

At the event entitled Clash of the Nations, Jake lost to UFC veteran Derrick Noble. He then defeated another UFC veteran Zach Light at the event Costa Rica Combat.

Bellator

Jake won his fight against Marcelo Alfaya at Bellator 11.

Ultimate Fighting Championships

Jake made his debut for the UFC at UFC Fight Night 19 against the last WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, where he replaced an injured Chris Lytle. Ellenberger had Carlos in big trouble in the first round, rocking him with big right hands, but as the rounds went on, Jake seemed to fade, probably due to taking the fight on short notice. Jake lost a split decision to Condit, but he put on a very good performance and will surely be back in the UFC.

Ellenberger bounced back from the loss at UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva on January 2, 2010. He faced off against former WEC Welterweight Champion Mike Pyle on the undercard. Pyle, a dominant ground fighter, pulled guard early in the first round and remained active from his back. But Ellenberger cracked his opponent with brutal ground and pound as the round came to a close. Pyle was slow to get to his feet and back to his corner, and Ellenberger capitalized with a brutal right hook early in the next frame. Pyle hit the mat, and Ellenberger quickly followed with a barrage of additional shots until referee Yves Lavigne called a halt to the action 22 seconds into the second round.

"This is the greatest feeling in the world," Ellenberger said after the fight. "Mike's a tough guy. He's got a good guard, and he's tough on the ground. ... I like to lay hands on guys have the ref pull me off."

When Martin Kampmann was forced off UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy against Ben Saunders, Ellenberger replaced him. Unfortunately for Ellenberger, only two days before the event, Thiago Alves, who was scheduled to face Jon Fitch in a much anticipated re-match, failed a CT scan, and the first reports said the bout was scratched. That would not be the case as Ben Saunders asked UFC brass that Fitch replace Ellenberger, and that is what came to pass. Ellenberger was taken off the card, though it should be noted that he was still given his "show" and "win" money to compensate being scratched, and he was replaced by Fitch.

Ellenberger returned at UFC Live 2: Jones vs. Matyushenko‎ on August 1, 2010, where he fought John Howard. After a dominant first round, Ellenberger couldn't effectively do the same in the second, getting wobbled by a few of Howard's shots. Ellenberger continually survived by scoring takedowns and slowing the attacks. In the end, it was one of Ellenberger's elbow strikes in the second round that prompted the end of the fight. The swelling on the left side of Howard's face began almost immediately and ballooned up to a sickening, stomach-churning level by the third round. The doctor ultimately halted the bout at the 2:21 mark of the final frame, handing Ellenberger the win by way of TKO (Doctor Stoppage).
