Mixed Martial Arts
Harris stumbled into Mixed Martial Arts by accident when his first fight was an exhibition bout that was just something a friend convinced him to do for fun. He beat his opponent so badly that he was invited to join the tournament and thus his professional fighting career began in August 2006. Harris won his fist five matches before losing a controversial split decision to Fabio Leopoldo in his International Fight League debut. After being on The Ultimate Fighter, Gerald went to train with Rampage Jackson for five weeks. Afterwards, Gerald asked to be cut from his fight team, Team Quest so he could move down to Arizona. Gerald then moved down to Arizona and starting talking to C.B. Dollaway about C.B.'s gym. Gerald began training with C.B. Dollaway, Matthew Riddle and Ryan Bader.
Gerald signed with management company MachiSport Entertainment as of February 25th, the same company managing former UFC Light heavyweight Champion, Rashad Evans.
The Ultimate Fighter
Harris was on the Spike TV reality show The Ultimate Fighter. He got on the show by beating Mike Madallo but lost in the second round to Amir Sadollah. He was a member of Team Rampage.
Post-TUF Career
After appearing on The Ultimate Fighter, Harris was close to signing with Bellator Fighting Championships and taking part in their first season middleweight tournament.
After competing for The Ultimate Fighter, Harris earned a six-fight win streak. He then improved his win streak to seven, defeating WEC veteran Nissen Osterneck at Shark Fights 6 on September 12, 2009 via KO (Punch) at 0:46 in the first round. The victory earned Harris the promotions first-ever Middleweight championship.
UFC Career
Though taking part in The Ultimate Fighter 7, and losing on the show to the eventual winner Amir Sadollah, Harris never fought on the show's finale. Instead he had to work his way back up, earning his seven-fight win streak, including the Shark Fight Middleweight Championship.
While UFC president Dana White was a guest on MMAjunkie.com Radio in later 2009, Harris called onto the show and told the UFC executive he was ready to make his octagon debut. After hearing about Harris' win streak and recent victory over Osterneck, White told him to call the offices so they could chat. The conversation evidently paid off and earned Harris a contract.
After Tim Credeur pulled out of his UFC Fight Night 20 bout with Mike Massenzio, Harris was announced as Credeur's replacement. Unfortunately, Massenzio ended up getting injured as well, so he was replaced by, at that time, 4-0 undefeated fighter John Salter. Round one most likely went to Salter, as he was a bit more aggressive, though it was a lackluster round for both fighters, but Harris tied it up by the second round. In the third round, Harris got himself in top position, reigning down elbows, until Salter turtles up, and Harris unloads more elbows and punches until the referee called a stop to the bout at 3:24 of the third round, handing Harris the win via TKO (Punchkes). The TKO victory earned Harris the Knockout of the Night Honors, as Harris was the only fighter to finish the fight via TKO, as the rest all ended in submission or decision.
Harris returned to action at UFC Fight Night 21 on March 31, 2010 where he faced Brazilian undefeated UFC newcomer Mario Miranda. Late in the first round, Harris wobbled his opponent with a wild hook and then followed up with additional blows to stop the fight at 4:49 of the first round by TKO (Punches), earning himself his second consecutive win in the UFC.
On July 3, 2010, Harris returned to the octagon at UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin, where he faced UFC newcomer Dave Branch. After besting his opponent standing and on the ground in the first two rounds, Harris set up an amazing cage-jarring slam in the third round. With Branch pinned against the cage and attempting a standing Guillotine Choke, Harris picked him up and slammed him to the mat. Although he had an opportunity to unload additional punches on Branch, Harris didn't need to. Branch was knocked out cold by the blow at the 2:35 mark of the round, and Harris walked away from his unconscious opponent. The slam earned Harris the Knockout of the Night Honors.
- "He's a good boxer and a tough guy, but I'm a new man now," said Harris, who had to escape multiple triangle-choke attempts. "After 'The Ultimate Fighter,' I became a much better fighter and a completely new man."
Personal Life
Harris currently is a high school history teacher. In addition he spends his free time managing his own stand-up comedy routine. He books all his own gigs, promotes them, and produces them. Gerald has five brothers and three sisters. Harris is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans. Harris graduated from Tulsa's East Central High School in 1998 where he was on the wrestling team and also the school mascot, the "Fighting Cardinal". Gerald has two sons, Gerald Jr. and Christopher.
Gerald's brother Corey was killed in March of 2009. A teenage driver making a quick left turn had collided with his motorcycle, killing him instantly. Despite this Gerald fought 7 days later and dedicated his victory his brother.
