[edit] Mixed Martial Arts Career
Santos has fought in numerous promotions when he first started competing, the majority of which taking place in Brazil.
He competed five times with the Cage Rage promotion in England. In his fourth appearance with the organization, Santos faced heavy handed slugger Melvin Manhoef for the Cage Rage World Light Heavyweight Championship. He lost the fight by KO (Punches) in the second round.
Before competing under the Cage Rage banner again, Santos competed twice in Japan in PRIDE, where he lost to Kazuhiro Nakamura, but defeated Yosuke Nishijima.
When he returned to Cage Rage, he fought once again for the Cage Rage World Light Heavyweight Championship, this time against James Zikic. Unfortunately he lost his second try at the title, this time losing a Decision (Unanimous).
[edit] Sengoku
Santos made his Sengoku debut at Sengoku: First Battle, where he faced off against Makoto Takimoto. He defeated his opponent late in the first round with an Achilles Lock. He returned to the promotion five months later, this time facing off against Shooto Light Heavyweight (185 lbs.) Champion Siyar Bahadurzada. The bout took place at Sengoku: Fifth Battle, and was the opening round of Sengoku's 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix. The bout was over before it ever truly began, as a takedown attempt by Bahadurzada resulted in Santos dislocating his elbow just 22 seconds into the bout.
[edit] Strikeforce
Santos made his Strikeforce debut at Strikeforce Challengers 2: Villasenor vs. Cyborg on June 19, 2009 against former King of the Cage Middleweight Champion Joey Villasenor. After they nearly came to blows at the weigh-ins, the crowd was expecting fireworks. Instead, they went the entire first round without landing an effective strike. Villasenor won the opening frame with a takedown and little else. He landed a hard, straight left at the start of the second but the pace slowed again. Both fighters let their hands fly in the third, and Villasenor bloodied Santos with several overhand lefts. The fight was too close to call, and the judges felt the same way. Villasenor escaped with the Decision (Split) win, 29-28, 29-28 and 28-29.
After the loss he fought outside of the promotion at a Samurai FC event, where he faced Daniel Zarate in his home country of Brazil. He ended the fight in impressive fashion early in the first round by way of TKO (Head Kick and Punches).
Both Evangelista and his wife announced that they would return to action for Strikeforce sometime in 2010. On top of that announcement, Santos stated that he would be moving down a weight class to be competing as a welterweight. It was learned mid-May 2010 that his welterweight debut would take place at Strikeforce: Los Angeles where he faced off against DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis, who was coming off a loss to Nick Diaz in an attempt to win the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship. Though Zaromskis looked faster and more accurate early in the first round, by mid-round, Santos had settled into counterpunching and keeping his opponent backing up in hopes to reset after each exchange. After one of Santos' high kicks seemed to stun Zaromskis, who still attempted to fire back, Santos fired off a few more punches that brought his opponent to the mat and he went on to win shortly after by TKO (Punches) at the 3:35 mark of the opening round.
[edit] Personal Life
Santos is married to female MMA fighter Cristiane Santos. He also has a daughter from a previous relationship.
