Biography
At 22 he began training as a boxer, but soon switched over to mixed martial arts after training with a few friends.
In his spare time Blackburn likes to fish and ride quads around Seattle with his friends and family.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
On July 30, 2005, Blackburn replaced an injured Tony Fryklund as a last minute replacement, where he faced off against Roger Huerta for the IFC Welterweight Championship. He was defeated by TKO (Corner Stoppage) in the third round.
Blackburn was a contender on the now defunct IFL before signing on to the UFC. He held a record of 12 wins, 9 losses, 1 draw, and 1 no contest before joining the UFC.
UFC Career
Blackburn made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 14: Silva vs. Irvin against James Giboo, who he defeated by TKO (Flying Knee and Punches) in the second round. He followed this up with two more consecutive decision wins over Ryo Chonan and Edgar Garcia.
After going 3-0 in the UFC, Blackburn signed a new four-fight deal with the promotion in August of 2009. Unfortunately, Blackburn's first fight after signing his new contract was against The Ultimate Fighter 7 middleweight winner, Amir Sadollah. The two began a stand-up battle, with Sadollah gaining the upper hand, catching Blackburn quite a few times, though he was never able to get a stoppage, as he continued to take the fight to the mat when his opponent was rocked. Sadollah's much improved stand-up earned him the Decision (Unanimous) win, ending Blackburn's six-fight win streak.
He returned to action on April 10, 2010 at UFC 112: Invincible, where he faced off against The Ultimate Fighter 9 finalist DaMarques Johnson. Johnson found himself on the wrong end of a boxing and grappling showcase for 10 minutes and appeared to be down two rounds heading into the final frame. Blackburn put him on the mat once again, but Johnson exploded out of the position and worked to the top. A series of elbows from the top cut Blackburn open, and Johnson continued the assault as the two returned to their feet and Johnson earned the stoppage at 2:08 of the final round due to TKO (Kick to the Body).
Though Blackburn started his UFC career off strong, with the two consecutive losses to Amir Sadollah and DaMarques Johnson, he was released by the promotion.
Post-UFC Career
Blackburn's first fight since being released by the UFC took place on August 19, 2010 at Bellator 25 where he faced Bellator's Season Two Welterweight Tournament Finalist Dan Hornbuckle. Blackburn opened with effective boxing and outstruck Hornbuckle en route to claiming the opening round. But as time wore on, Blackburn's crisp attacks lessened in frequency, and Hornbuckle was able to effectively mix in kicks and knees along with his punches from range. Hornbuckle battled through a brutal groin shot over the final round-and-a-half, and Blackburn's face began to show the effects of the punishment in the final frame, and though he battled valiantly until the end, it was Hornbuckle who won the fight by Decision (Unanimous), scoring 29-28 on all three judges' cards.
