Mixed Martial Arts Career
EliteXC Heavyweight Title
On July 26, 2008 Silva won the EliteXC Heavyweight title with a second round TKO over former UFC veteran Justin Eilers. Silva later tested positive after the fight with Eilers for the anabolic steroid Boldenone, was suspended for 1 year, and fined $2500.00 by the California State Athletic Commission.
Before his suspension ended, EliteXC folded, making him the last EliteXC Heavyweight Champion.
Sengoku
Following the ensuing debacle with the CSAC, Silva signed on to fight at Sengoku 7. Having been advised not to fight in Japan by the California State Athletic Commission, he ignored their advice, continually preaching his innocence. Pressure from the commission and his peers continued, but on January 4, 2009, Silva stepped into the ring against Yoshihiro Nakao, winning an anticlimactic bout by TKO due to a knee injury in the first round.
By competing in Japan before his suspension ended in the United States, Silva jeopardized his chances of competing in the United States anytime in the near future.
In July of 2009 Affliction folded, right before their Affliction: Trilogy card. The reason for the cancellation of the show was because they could not find a suitable replacement for Fedor Emelianenko, because his opponent Josh Barnett tested positive for anabolic steroids. A week later, Silva's year-long suspension in the States ended and he stated that he wished to fight Josh Barnett in Sengoku.
Silva was then scheduled to fight "Big" Jim York at World Victory Road Presnts: Sengoku 10, on September 23, 2009. According to reports that had been circling around, Silva had been told by a Sengoku official that if he is to beat York, he would most likely fight Josh Barnett at the next Sengoku event, for the promotions Heavyweight title. Silva defeated York in impressive fashion, submitting him with an Arm Triangle Choke at 3:51 of the first round.
Instead of competing for the Sengoku heavyweight title, "Big Foot" fought on the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers Novermber 7, 2009 card against PRIDE and UFC veteran, and fellow Brazilian Fabricio Werdum. The fight had major implications in the Strikeforce heavyweight rankings, as to who could most likely face Fedor Emelianenko in the future. Silva was handed his second career loss at the hands of Werdum, who edged out a unanimous decision.
Silva was offered a fight with Josh Barnett with Sengoku, yet he turned it down, as he believed there was not enough time to prepare for the event. He decided to focus on Strikeforce, where he said he would be either fighting Brett Rogers or Andrei Arlovski.
- "They called me to fight on March 22, but that would be really cutting it close. It would be against Josh Barnett and left it up in the air. The focus remains on April, at Strikeforce, which is likely to go down," he reaffirmed.
It was announced March 1, 2010 that Silva would return to action for Strikeforce, where he would face off against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski on May 15, 2010 at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery. Arlovski was on a two fight slide, had changed training camps, and was in need of a win, but that win would not come, as Silva out-boxed and out-grappled his opponent to a Decision (Unanimous) victory.
