Mixed Martial Arts Career
Known primarily for his extensive background in judo, Alves has also trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the tutelage of Andre Pederneiras. Since turning professional in 2006, Alves has competed for smaller organizations in his native country of Brazil and is a teammate and training partner of current WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo at Nova Uniao.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Alves made his North American, as well as UFC debut against Mike Pierce on August 28, 2010 at UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2. Pierce, a former Portland State University wrestler, scored the takedowns with ease but initially offered little in the way of strikes or submission attempts. However, in the final frame of an otherwise ho-hum bout, Pierce attacked his opponent's left arm with a Kimura attempt before repositioning and securing the Armbar at the 3:11 mark.
