Mixed Martial Arts Career

Making his pro debut in July 2004 against Tim Ellis in Freestyle Fighting Championship and winning by TKO, Belcher really didn't get started in his MMA career until early 2006. Belcher amassed 9 fights, going 8-1. His only loss in 2006 came at the hands of Yushin Okami, a skilled Japanese fighter at UFC 62. Belcher took the fight on two-weeks notice after David Terrell pulled out citing a sinus infection. Belcher made his second UFC appearance against Jorge Santiago just three months later, winning by knockout due to a head kick.

At UFC 69, Belcher lost to The Ultimate Fighter 3 winner Kendall Grove. Belcher then defeated Sean Salmon one month later at UFC 71 with a guillotine choke at 0:53 of the first round. Belcher took the fight on ten-days notice after Eric Schafer pulled out due to sustaining a broken rib during training.

Belcher then defeated Kalib Starnes at UFC 77 on October 20, 2007. After controlling the fight with punches and knees from the clinch, the fight was eventually stopped in favor of Belcher due to a large gash over Starnes' right eye.

Belcher was scheduled to fight at UFC 81 against Ricardo Almeida, but he had to pull out two days before the fight due to a severe case of Bronchitis. Belcher was then to fight Patrick Cote at UFC 83 in Montreal, but unfortunately Patrick Cote had to withdraw due to a knee injury. UFC newcomer Jason Day replaced Cote in a fight that saw Day quickly finish Belcher with strikes in the first round.

Belcher bounced back at UFC 93, scoring a submission victory against the experienced, but UFC newcomer, Denis Kang, winning the Submission of the Night Honors. He would then go on to win the Fight of the Night Honors at UFC 100 against another UFC newcomer and Judo gold medalist Yoshihiro Akiyama, losing by Decision (Split).

Returning from his loss to Akiyama, Belcher would next face off against another man hoping to bounce back from a high profile loss, Wilson Gouveia. The fight would take place on December 12, 2009 at UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez. The day before the bout it was learned that the two fighters had agreed on the bout being at a Catchweight of 195 lbs. According to UFC officials, Gouveia asked for the bout to be at 190 lbs, but Belcher countered with a 195 lbs limit, as he was already 195 lbs and didn't see the use of cutting anymore weight at that point. Belcher had also made it quite clear, going on record numerous times to say that he was extremely disrespected by the fact that he was on the undercard of the event. While the action didn't unfold at a frantic pace, Belcher and Gouveia did engage in a few toe-to-toe exchanges as the first round opened. Both appeared a bit woozy from the shots, but neither backed down. As the two fired off powerful rounds at each other, it was "The Talent" who found the target first with a series of powerful hooks and uppercuts. Gouveia collapsed to the floor, and Belcher rushed in to finish the job at the 3:03 mark of the first frame, earning a TKO (Punches) victory. Both fighters won the Fight of the Night Honors.

Building off of his victory over Wilson Gouveia, Belcher returned at UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 in Montreal, Canada, where he faced off against home-town hero Patrick Cote, whose last fight was a loss at the hands of UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva in a title shot. Cote looked good in the beginning, almost ending the fight with a Kimura that had his opponent grimacing in pain. Belcher survived the submission, took top position and fought back for a close first round. However, in the second round, Cote found his range and took the edge after some spirited exchanges. Belcher was wobbled on a few occasions but continually fought back with his always-effective body kicks. Those blows may have prompted Cote to attempt a takedown, but when the submission specialist dipped for a double-leg takedown, Belcher picked him up and dropped him face first into the mat. Belcher then quickly transitioned to his opponent's back, secured a body lock, and torqued a Rear Naked Choke. Unable to escape, Cote was forced to tap out at the 3:25 mark of the round. The submission earned him the Submission of the Night Honors.

"I'm happy I'm finally fighting to my potential and not coming in here goofing around and not fighting to the best of my ability," said Belcher, who campaigned for a shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva in his post-fight interview.
