== Mixed Martial Arts Career ==
Volkmann started his professional MMA career in 2007, primarily competing in Minnesota. In August 2009, it was announced he would be making his UFC debut at UFC 106 Ortiz vs Griffin II. He was scheduled to face Paulo Thiago on the undercard, but when the Dustin Hazelett and Karo Parisyan fight was cancelled, Volkmann got to compete on the main card. He went on to be defeated in his UFC debut by unanimous decision.
Once Rory Markham dropped out of his UFC 108 Evans vs Silva bout against Martin Kampmann, Volkmann jumped at the opportunity to replace the injured fighter. Though the bout was on the undercard, the fight was aired live on SpikeTV. Volkmann landed a few good shots, though they were not technical to say the least. After getting dropped by a counter, followed up by hammerfists, Kampmann locked in the fight ending Guillotine Choke at 4:03 of the first round, handing Volkmann his second straight loss in the UFC.
It was announced in February of 2010 that Volkmann was dropping down to lightweight, where he would face Ronys Torres on March 31, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 21. Volkmann’s Lightweight debut was a success as he walked away the winner by Decision (Split), which was a bit confusing as one judge had a 29-28 score in favor of Torres, though it was an otherwise dominating performance for Volkmann, who took the fight 30-27 on the other two judges’ scorecards.
Volkmann returned to action at [[UFC Live 2 Jones vs Matyushenko‎]] on August 1, 2010 where he faced England’s Paul Kelly. The fight went to the judges score cards, but it was Volkmann’s dominance on the ground that earned him the Deciaion (Unanimous).
