MMA....seasons?

Postby camerontheman » Sat Jul 31, 2010 1:55 am

I was just thinking about how sweet it would be to see an organization have seasons, instead of just championship belts. It would make that organization run more as a sport rather then a company, the problem with the UFC is that they sign and cut fighters who no one hears about probably a couple times a month, and they have someone picking their fights for them.

Lets face it Joe Silva and Dana decide on who is getting title shots and what not when it all comes down to it. Just look at WW, Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley were their two candidates for title contenders, did either of them really deserve it? Kos was just coming off a loss for gods sake.

But what I am trying to get at in this post is; wouldn't it be pretty cool to see MMA in a season type format? where all of the divisions are fighting at the same time, but like say the LW title final fight was in january, the lightweights would fight all year round, and next january the top two guys (who won all of their fights) fought for the championship, and then it all started over again, sort of like on going playoffs. But the WW division title fight would be in like march, and the same thing would happen there, then the MW title fight would be in april or may, and so on and so forth with every division.

Because of how many fighters there are they could need a schedule for more then a year, but this way you would always see the best fighting the best at the end of it all, because the two guys going at it would have had to of beaten everyone on their path to get there, sort of like the NFL or NHL playoffs. We would also see championship fights almost once every two months no matter what.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I think if someone found a way to make MMA work as a season, and each individual fighter would be like a team in any other sport.

after writing all that i also thought about what it would be like to have like 20 teams of fighters, each team has 5 fighters, one in each weight class, and at the end of each season they literally have best of 5 playoff fights, so team A's 5 fighters will fight team B's 5 fighters, and whichever team wins the most fights wins the series.

What I like most about MMA is that there are no seasons. No. Just no.

it's all good, you should check them out. They have a tournament format throughout the season and each season's divisional winner fights the champ at the end of the season. There are plenty of non-tournament fights to fill the cards as well and the champ usually has a few non-title tune up fights each season too.

why though? title fights are slowly going to become rematch after rematch after rematch because every division is going to find a guy who is way better then everyone else and wont be knocked down from the top. (GSP, Silva, Shogun might be this person at LHW)

it would also eliminate injuries holding back title fights.

so i sort of just checked it out and from what i could gather it was one tournament season with a few different weight classes? imagine if the lightweights started a tournament, then the welterweights started a bit later then them, and then the MW's started, and this went on until you had every division going on through a tournament, well then the championships would happen all a few weeks or a month apart from eachother, and when the HW one is done, the lightweight season would start back up again, this way its an ongoing tournament, and theres always fights.

i wish i caught this before though, would have loved to of watched it.

season 3 is starting up in august...the first season decided their champs who are:

FW - Joe Soto
LW - eddie alvarez
WW - Lyman Good
MW - Hector Lombard

then season 2 had tournaments to find who will be the # 1 contender and they are:

FW - Joe Warren
LW - Pat Curran
WW - Ben Askren
MW - Alexander Shlemenko

season 3 will have the title match ups listed above and will also feature brand new tournaments for the Mens HW division and the women's 115lb division.

seasons would be tough. I enjoy the way that Bellator has it all set up and if they were to apply a more well structured base that you've descbribed here then it may be exctiing. But that wont change the fact that certain fighters will domniate and certain fighters will continously go unnoticed. GSP probaly would still be pretty dominant. And it'd have to be you have tow in to move on and it just would find certain fighters getting lucky punches only to move on to the next round and get absoulutely stomped. Or have certain fighters who would have consistently beat one guy, then lose to another only to have the guy they've beaten multiple times win the division. It'd be like GSP losing part way through these playoffs only to have BJ Penn win the season and we all know GSP can beat Penn. I like your spirit though kid keep it up

what makes this submission even better, is the fact that Lytle considers himself a boxer at heart.

sig bet record
3-4, thank you Diaz and Maia for good performance at 118.

I don't like the UFC trend of giving reality show winners/coaches a shot at the title...especially guys who have already lost to the champ and are only getting the shot since they are Dana's pets.

I do like the idea of having a tournament to determine contender slots...especially when champs are injured or just don't fight more than once every several months (every 3-4 months is more than enough time between fights, barring injury). Winner gets the next title shot...after all, they just won 2 or 3 fights against the other top contenders, regardless of where they were ranked before the tournament.

If a guy ranked #10 can beat 2 or 3 guys to win a tournament (all of whom are ranked higher), doesn't he deserve to be moved up in the rankings and proved that he earned a title shot?

no. not a good idea

person who wins the belt wins the belt and keeps it until they are defeated in each respective weight class

if you are referencing the UFC as an example for this thread, then what they need to do is make a RANKING SYSTEM, PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE!!!!! That is all, thank you!

boxing seems to do just fine, so i dont see why it couldn't work in MMA.

remember several years ago where 3 young HWs named arlovski, sylvia, and mir looked like they would dominate the UFC for years? or what if i had told you in 2005 that brock lesnar would fight an engineer for the HW, would you have believed me? or how about 3 years ago when jon jones' biggest claim to fame was that his big brother played football for syracuse?

point is, new contenders emerge, old ones fall off, etc. etc.
HW - Ubereem, Arlovski
LHW - Rampage
MW - Belcher, Filthy Tom Lawlor, Mark Munoz
WW - Nate Diaz, Koscheck, Fitch
LW - Penn, Guillard. Sotiropolous
