Shinya Aoki Ranked #4

Postby SpacexBound » Sat Apr 14, 2012 1:34 pm

Shinya has a impressive record of 30 wins with just 5 defeats. Scrolling through his record i've noticed the majority of fighters he have fought were not even close to top ten. He is ranked as the #4 lightweight in the world and i strongly disagree. Great fighter not trying to bash or discredit the guy, but does anybody else feel he should be ranked #4.

Its just not logical.
Beating guys ranked in the 20-30 range will NEVER get you in a top 5 spot.

...But he's not in the UFC so he's been the flavor of the week for all the "cool guys" for quit some time.

(off the top of my head) Guys I would pick to beat Aoki:
Edgar
Diaz
Bendo
Maynard
Miller
Pettis
Cerrone
Guida
Melendez
Lauzon
Wiman
Stout
Guillard even... and probably a few others that I'm not thinking of. He MIGHT be able to pull off a sub on 3-4 of these guys if they were stupid enough to lay around in his guard. Aoki is the epitome of a 1 trick pony - definitely not a top 5 MMA fighter in todays world. Sorry cool guys

lolwut?

Lets run through the top ten ranked fighters he faced:

JZ
Alvarez
Uno(was ranked in the top 10 at the time)
Hansen(both times)
Kawajiri
and Hirota.

Not to mention former top 10 opponents like:
Vitor Riberio
Kikuchi
Kitoka

And finally very solid fighters like
Beerbohm
Marcus
Clementi
Sotiropoulus

He has beaten some cans, sure. But when you fight at the rate he does, it's pretty tough for that
not to happen.
HW: Barry, JDS, Fedor LHW: Shogun, Mousasi MW: Wand, Belcher WW: Alves, Condit LW: Aoki, Showtime Pettis FW: Aldo, CSJ BW: Renan Barao FlyW: Sergio Pettis StrawW:Rambaa M16

Say what you want, Jose Aldo Jr is P4P number 1.

With an exception of Bendor, Showtime, Maynard and melendez Aoki would make balloon animals out of 80% of the UFC's LW division.

He is indeed a one trick pony, But that one trick has many dimensions. He's worthy of top 5 imo.

Does it really matter what place you are ranked in the top 10?

Aoki's one of my favorite fighters to watch and I'd love to see him vs. someone like guida. hard to guess where'd he'd fit in the ufc lw division (clearly stronger competition than who he's been fighting). He definitely is a one dimensional fighter, but manages. I think his lack of striking makes people forget how big/strong he actually is for a lw.
Gil couldn't finish him.

for me its not really about record

it is about who is more dangerous overall

I'd have Aoki fairly up there maybe not #4 but close

i disagree, his dangerous only when he gets his opponents to the ground. his stand up sucks balls. i don't see him ranked number 4. maybe top ten but that's it
