I don't think gullible sums it up quite right. At least not in the short term.

I think that Chael takes the short cut to stirring up the pot. He steps out of line and offends fanboys and the general public. This sets his words right past the normal cerebral response and goes right into the emotions of the listener - defensively, that is. Anyone who follows cornholing-WWE, or has sons who watch it - will recognize this silly game and the role of the heel in entertainment. It is not a lack of "critical thinking" that sets a person up to riled by The Heel. It is simply an appeal the emotions - in a negative manner - and it works great.

We see this in other manifestations - though it is usually not intentional on the part of the person.

Dana is short, stubby, small fisted, bald - it goes great with his greedy or callous speech. Very Trump of him.

Kimbo says all the right things - but he's a lot darker than the average viewer, very different looking and despite his intelligent efforts to the make the most of his situation - .. most posters have labelled him as a dumb thug who fluked his way in by way of ghetto-character self-promotion.

Media writers/interviewers pick up on the emotional reactions from fans and play into it. Once you are labelled, it is very hard to shake it. Randy juiced for years, has surrounded himself with cheaters - yet fans hear Goldie call him "the Natural" or "Captain America" enough times and these labels stick.

Liddell, Page, Brandon, Frank.. all played the anti-hero for several years until they got their shot. Then they tried reinvent their image. It took the right marketing to make that turn around. Their job in the cage/ring wasn't enough.

Tito, Nick, Ken, and now Chael represent the guys who go out there and dig for an emotional response in order to side step the fight makers and make themselves relevant. Works like a charm.
