If Chavez Jr. wants a small ring then Martinez needs to ask for a rehydration limit

There's little question that WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and his promotional team will be pushing hard for as small a ring as humanly possible for Chavez Jr's September 15th fight against Sergio Martinez in Las Vegas. The idea here is for Chavez Jr. to be able to trap Martinez, and for him to fight an inside battle that will suit Chavez Jr's style of fighting.

However, Martinez needs at least an 18-foot to 20-foot ring for him to move around in against the stalking Chavez Jr. For the Andy Lee vs. Chavez Jr. fight, it looked as if they were fighting in a small 16-foot ring. There wasn't any mention of the actual ring size that night but it looked awfully small, and it clearly helped Chavez Jr. catch up to Lee. Some boxing fans think it's great for fighters to have as small a ring as possible so that it will force action a lot more, and that's certainly true.

However, if you're going to have Chavez Jr. fighting Martinez in a telephone booth sized ring then then Martinez needs to push for a rehydration limit so that Chavez Jr. doesn't balloon up more than 10 pounds after he rehydrates. Fair is fair. You can't have Chavez Jr. bloating up 20+ pounds and weighing over 180 pounds, and then also getting the benefit of a small ring to fight in.

That's not really fair because he's a much heavier middleweight than Martinez. For Chavez Jr. to get both of those things seems hardly unfair, but that's likely what's going to happen because he holds the WBC title. Martinez can say no, but that will only give Chavez Jr. an excuse to walk away and go fight some more Sebastian Zbiks and Andy Lees in a small ring.

A smaller ring and rehydrating is 2 totally different dynamics. This writer is retarded if he thinks thats fair. If Chavez wants a smaller ring Martinez should get more money...not put Jrs health at risk like that. Rehydration clauses are bullshit imo.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. This topic has been in all of the boxing forums and people keep saying that Chavez needs a rehyrdation clause for this fight. If a guy wants to put his body through all that just to make weight, let him.

Rehydration clauses, how the fuck is that legal? "Hey, you just went through all the trouble to cut weight, but now you can only drink a certain amount of water." That's someone's health you're fucking with. If Martinez thinks they're trying to give Chavez an edge with a smaller ring, he should just tell him to man up and fight in a bigger ring, or else he won't fight.

so don't dehydrate yourself like a retard. I am opposed to fighters who do this and later on weigh 20-25 pounds more...You are not fucking with the other fighter's health then ??? He may be fighting at his natural weight and here you come, 30 pounds heavier...to put him into a coma...

They should fight in a 20 ft ring, period. A rehydration clause for Chavez will def be dangerous. Just look at DLH vs Manny. DLH was dehydrated as hell and was basically a zombie. Manny beat the shit out of him. Now, its also dangerous for Chavez to weigh 20 lbs more than his opponents. Thats 3 whole weight classes!

Yeah, but he can make the weight and he's already killing himself to do it obviously. Its not like he's Martinez' mandatory....this is who sergio has been chasing. He knows he weighs 220 fight night  . Not to mention...he's not going to weigh much more than Martinez fight night because eventhough he talks that small MW shit he comes into the ring himself a LHW :| .

I'd definitely say Martinez should not accept the fight if Chavez tries to pull that shit, and I'm sure they will. As for the rehydration, I'm against putting a fighter's health at risk. But if they try to do this shit in Texas where Chavez can get away without doing drug testing, then fuck yeah there should be a rehydration clause. Coming in at such a weight advantage puts his opponents health at risk, why should Chavez be exempt from having his health at risk?

Because he makes weight! Theres nothing that says you cant gain 20 lbs after the weigh in and if youre gaining 20 lbs after the weigh in youre already draining yourself and putting your health at risk...add a rehydration clause on top of it and we could see someone get killed...literally. Fighting in Texas is no big deal because I can guarantee Martinez doesnt want to be tested himself  . What did he say about Chavez juicing...."He's a good sport." GTFOH    .

Legitimately? I wouldn't be so sure about that. Before he had Ariza, so I gave him that. But the last fight with Lee, didn't have Ariza for much of the camp IIRC, and made weight fine but didn't get drug tested? I think it would be pretty safe to say he had some help.

Martinez says he thinks hes clean and wouldnt ask for more stringent drug testing so he cant use that as an excuse.

Wouldn't be surprised one bit....Chavez/Pavlik isn't a bad 2nd option though....at 168.
