Those who won the fight, but not the war.

Postby MMAPunkBillCarson » Sun Apr 08, 2012 4:10 am

Often in MMA, there are instances where a fighter is dominating up until a KO/Sub takes the fight from him. He didn't win the fight, but he gave the opponent the fight of his life and pushed him to desperation.

Obviously, the first example that comes to mind is Chael/Anderson. Chael had beaten and battered Silva up until the very impressive submission pulled off by the amazing Anderson Silva.

What are other fights like this in which the loser was the one dominating up until everything was taken from him?

By the way, please understand that I realize that the ones who won the fight are winners. This is not taking away from Anderson or any other fighter who falls into this category. Actually, this is meant as a praise if you will to both fighters at hand.

i really dont think sonnen battered silva seein as silva didnt have any cuts/bruises/blood, yet sonnen had all of that. he did do a good job at controlling the fight from start to finish tho .
back to the topic, first fight that comes to mind is paul kelly vs donald cerrone. i really thought cerrone was just gonna run thru kelly but kelly really put it to him. he landed multiple punches and i remember thinking to myself that cerrone is gonna get KO'd if those punches keep slipping thru.
could have just been a mental lapse for cerrone since kelly basically tried to sucker punch him when he went to touch gloves, or cerrone just underestimated kelly and didnt train as hard for the fight.

I think that is what the OP is talking about. I am also going to add to the list the first Scott Smith vs Cung Lee fight.
