School me on : Gilbert Melendez... because...

Postby mrbwo » Wed Sep 28, 2011 9:32 pm

I'm not sure why people are so high on him... I've seen him in Strikeforce, but I'm not convinced that he's a top 3 LW in UFC like most are saying here.

Maybe he won't? Maybe he gets KOd? But maybe he doesn't. Maybe we are treated to a classic Wand performance, which will be all the more sweet because we fucking BELIEVED in this hero of our generation.

I'd give that a +1 if you had a different avatar, but you don't. So I am forced to give that a +10,000.

Doesnt have to be a top 3 LW in the UFC, he's a top 5 LW in general.

big difference between Gil and the other top LW's, he's actually beat Top competition from the US, AND everywhere else with an exception of Alvarez.

Weeeelll...he's 19-2, has avenged both of his losses.

He's faught only in higher level orgs:

Rumble on the Rock
Pride
WEC
Shooto
Strikeforce

He's beaten:
Jeff Hougland (just started in the UFC)
Hiroyuki Takaya
Clay Guida (current top 5ish)
Kawajiri 2x (former top 5)
Ishida (lost, and avenged it)
Josh Thomson (lost, and avenged it)
Rodrigo Damm
Shinya Aoki (former top 3)

He has a good argument for the #1 ranking, especially with how he dominated Kawajiri and Aoki. I wouldn't quite put him there yet...I think Frankie deserves it because of his top wins...2x over BJ, Sherk, Jim Miller..and some other quality wins in the UFC.

I think it would be a great fight between them...I think I'd pick Gil though..

i think hes cracking top5 but i think a guy like melvin guilliard would slap melendez silly, tbh i wasnt impressed with his fight over kawajiri, tatsuya looked like shit imo and it wasnt because gilbert was that good jmo.

Gil could snag the ufc belt if the conditions are right no doubt, I think he'd takeout Bully or Answer..so he should come into the fold soon.

totally, he's considered that by alot of people, but rankings are opinions

melvin is top10 in my book, but in ufc, i think when you throw aoki, melendez, alverez etc....in, he gets bumped out

probably not, but i just think anyone at lw dumb enough to stand and trade with melvin will get ravaged, i know he has a submission deficiency, but since hes at team jackson im sure they are working on that aspect and his wrestling and sprawl is good enough to the point i think he can dictate fights if he doesnt get overzealous...

thats why jacksons the best, he can get his fighters to use thier strengths to win, I mean if GSP would have been trained at AKA, he would still be doing Kyokushin, and may have been a serious knockout artist, but not the winning machine he is now......
