help cutting

Postby Classicbjj » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:10 pm

well obviously i need help cutting for an upcoming bjj tournament. i normally havent had an issue but i missed weight by only a pound on a 5 pound cut.

i have a strict diet which has worked all summer (got off it because i went back to school) and train regularly. i am trying to cut the 10-12 pounds i need to lose over three weeks before the tourny so i am training harder, eating better again, and am thinking about using my days off to spend in the suana for a little bit.

anyone have tips or things i can replace in my schedule or add to it? or just tips to help out 8)

Well there's this: http://www.grapplearts.com/How-to-Cut-Weight.html
But there's also this: http://www.grapplearts.com/Making-Weigh ... ration.htm

How advanced are you in grappling? Chances are you aren't even at a point yet where you have to worry about weight classes--just get in there and compete. 10-12 pounds is a good amount of weight for beginner/intermediate grappler, especially in 3 weeks.

Think of it this way: say you're 167 right now, and say there are weight classes at 155 and 165. Would you rather spend your last three weeks worrying about weight and depleting yourself in the process or would you rather spend that time busting your ass and competing with marginally larger athletes (many of whom may be depleted from cutting too much)?

To each his own, but I would consider whether you actually need to cut.

i am hopefully gonna have my purple by the end of this barring any injuries. i have compete at my weight (u guessed correct, 165) and didnt do well, but my skinner days at 155 i did very well, hence y moving back to the idea of cutting.

but u r correct in three weeks its a lot to get rid of and might need to rethink it

Well if you're an experienced blue belt this might be a different story.

Regardless, 10 pounds at 165 bw is 6% of your BW that you want to lose. It's doable but will be tough. I'd read that Rooney article and see how that works for you. Also do you have an instructor or training partner experienced with cutting?

I can lose roughly 10 pounds by cutting carbs to very minimal amounts and 3-5x 20min in the sauna in less than a week, but then again i'm 240 so 10 pounds is only 4% of my BW.

Good luck man.
