Some local flavor has been added to Strikeforce's next major event.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today announced that Ohio-based middleweights Dominique Steele (3-1 MMA, 0-0 SF) and Chris Mierzwiak (3-0 MMA, 0-0 SF) have been added to the preliminary card of "Strikeforce Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Kharitonov."
The event takes place next Saturday, Sept. 10, at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati.
The event's main card airs live on Showtime, and the prelims, including Steele vs. Mierzwiak, air on HDNet.
It's a short drive to the arena for Steele, who trains out of Vision MMA in Cincinnati and counts Strikeforce welterweight Roger Bowling among his training partners. Steele enjoys a three-fight win streak in regional competition with all four of his fights ending in the first round.
Mierzwiak, who hails from the Dayton area, also keeps Strikeforce company. A disciple of UFC and Strikeforce vet Jorge Gurgel, he is undefeated in regional competition. His most recent victory came in a brisk 35 seconds.
"Strikeforce Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Kharitonov" features the semifinals of the promotion's heavyweight grand prix. Josh Barnett vs. Sergei Kharitonov headlines with Antonio Silva vs. Daniel Cormier taking the co-main-event position.
