You cant just have one fighter per weight class, because often times even the winners arent medically cleared to fight again for months. It would have to be a team sport where one guy wins, and a different guy steps in for the next fight. Maybe you do 5 team mates for each weight calss, giving you a total of 5 fights for each weight class.

Is this just a theoretical-ignoring-the-fact-they'd-be-amateurs-and-only-absolute-hardcore-fans-would-know-more-than-a-handful-of-fighters thread?

would it be like boxing, where everyone is an amateur fighter. or like soccer where theres an age limit, or would it be completely open? i would like there to be an age limit, so younger guys could build their names off of it.

I imagine there would be a lot of pros looking to win a gold medal for their country. Gazillionaire basketball players are doing it, so I don't see why MMA would be any different.

I have watched Judo, Boxing and Taekwondo bouts in OL, and with all the safety precautions i don't see how MMA will ever enter except by the introduction of a pure submission round and pure striking round contest. A taekwondo fighter has padded shinbones as well as padded feets. A boxer has padded gloves (NOT MMA gloves!!) and headgear protection. A judo fighters can loose a fight by 2 accumulated mistakes, and only have a 5 minute round and a golden score round.

So based on the idea of a submission and striking contest, each one round ... i would go with fighters like Lyoto Machida, Anthony Pettis, BJ Penn, Erick Silva (whom btw seems to posses really great judo skills) ... in the HW divison i would go with Cain V since the added protection gives his speed extra leverage and his ground skills are very fluid ... if it a bout under the unified rules i would go with Junior Dos Santos. Middle weight will possible be a fighter like Gegard Mousasi.

I doubt a fighter like Jon Jones would be allowed to compete in the LHW division (there would be different weigh in rules)... a guy like Chael Sonnen would be booted out immediately based on TRT consumption, and generally unsportsmanlike behavior and Alistair Overeem would be rejected based on his testosterone based frame alone....

Pretty sure the country you are looking for is Brazil and why not Machida? He would do much better than the Yankees first baseman.
Looking for Sig Bets, I got:
Cat Zingano > Miesha Tate (Tron)
Cormier > Mir
Vitor > Rockhold (Tron)
Werdum > Mir
Cezar > Dollaway

NFL runners can take a hit without their bodies shattering, unlike those skinny fucks in the olympics.

Dont jinx your favorite players, guys in the NFL go down all the time. Players die almost every year. Its a rough sport.

I was just trying to make the point that some NFL players are fast enough that if they trained a little, they could make the Olympic team.

This is actually a very plausible and interesting idea. I could see some strategy coming into play on how you determine your lineup and it would solve the possible injury issues since you only fight once.
Top 3-5 countrymen for each weight class fighting one fight each with some points system for finishes, decisions and draws.

Yeah, the line up strategy would be interesting. Some teams would probably try and predict the line up of their opposition and attempt to stack the deck, while others might put their best guys in first in an effort to stay in the game long enough to at least get a bronze.
