GSP is one dimensional? No, really?

He might do the same general thing each fight, but since you are probably just saying (incorrectly) that he takes down everyone and just LnPs them I have to ask you this: How did the last 2 fights involving GSP go? You know, the rematch with Josh Koscheck (GSP lighting up Kos on the feet, busting up the face so badly that Kos couldn't even fly to Boston for the needed surgery) and the one with Jake Shields (where GSP shrugged off all of Jake's TD attempts and only went for 1 partial TD, after a caught kick...another fight where GSP dictated things on the feet despite being poked in the eye early in the fight).

Sorry, GSP is perhaps the least one dimensional fighter in the sport...certainly among the most well-rounded (including Nick Diaz who lacks wrestling and sense).

Yeah you've got me there, I'm talking about the Post-UFC 69 GSP. The LnP shit and the singular use of jabs to set up takedowns without any killer instinct in his strikes anymore. I can admit he's not one dimensional but seeing as how he's lost his killer instinct for good, it's basically the same fight striking or on the ground, he just happens to be the best defensive fighter in the world. And another thing is he passes guard with ease just to sit in the dominate position for the rest of the fight with no submission attempts and a lack of killer instinct in the ground and pound as well.

Edit : JDS showed that he can dictate where the fight is by taking down Carwin like a boss and never being taken down himself (if I recall correctly)

That is against a guy who was very wary of the big punches that might have been en route when the TDs were accomplished.

Give JDS someone who isn't afraid of standing with him and who is also fine on the mat and we'll see where JDS really stands.

I think he has a decent ground game being a Nog student, but that doesn't mean he is a legit blackbelt in the sport. He seems to rely on his hands, and with Carwin (who has power but is slow/predictable) who had been lit up Junior took down Shane but never really went for anything as far as real submissions go (from my recollection).

Well he's already a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Nog, which imo puts him at a black belt under other schools. Nog is one of the best.

Remember JDS was subbed by a relative no name in MMA and since then we've never seen dos Santos show off his BJJ skills since that time. He must be lacking in confidence unless he has someone in trouble/overmatched.

Yeah, but he caused a corner stoppage on that same guy 1 fight before he got submitted by him. So it's possible that he underestimated him. And honestly, I don't know why you think he's lacking in confidence just because he hasn't used his JJ. Did you ever stop to think that he LIKES to strike? That he enjoys the feeling of having knocked somebody out? Why should he feel obligated to show off his JJ when he's destroying somebody with his hands?

I'm not saying he isn't a solid fighter, but we have yet to see his ground game really tested to this point, especially against someone who can stand with him (Overeem would have been/still might be the real test for Junior).

Here can still be one dimensional fighters...for example someone who only can strike but has takedown defense..Imagine a fighter who sucks really hard on their back and is amazing at stopping takedowns..He is techniquelly one dimensional but awesome due to never going down..vice versa someone who always wins because they never strike, they have 100 takedown offense and always finish the fight on the ground..One dimensional yet effective.

It's fucking hilarious that you would say GSP is one dimensional. Man thats funny. I sit back and take all the boring comments with a grain of salt, but to say he's one dimensional is to say that Jimi Hendrix was a great singer and nothing more. LOL

They quietly understand

No...because then that fighter would be 2-dimensional, which still isn't all that good, but you can still dictate the pace of the fight in most cases. But then you have guys like Anderson Silva who have 3 blackbelts and experience in all area, and they are the people who we have as champions.

Five of JDS's UFC fights have ended in the first round. That doesn't give the guy much time to show how well rounded he is  .

I think dos santos was more the real test for overeem, and we all know the results of that test....... 8)

Saying JDS is one dimensional is crazy. He hasn't needed to use BJJ to win fights. This doesn't mean he doesn't have it. Saying GSP is one dimensional is even crazier. Aoki and Manhoef are one dimensional fighters. There is no one dimensional champ in the UFC.

There were a lot of one-dimensional champs; thinking back to Hughes, Liddell. I don't think JDS is one dimensional, though I agree that his ground game needs to be tested.

Thinking GSP is one-dimensional because he hasn't finished some recent fights is beyond feeble. He DICTATES where the fight goes, standing or ground. Easily one of the most well-rounded fighters out there.

Lesnar? JDS's ground game is probably pretty solid. Did you see him PD Carwin?

Shields only had one TD attempt. That doesn't make what you said untrue, but it is misleading. GSP landed 2 or 3 takedowns right before the bell for points.

Overall, GSP is a smothering fighter. He's Jon Fitch with a jab and a horrible spinning back kick. He's not any better to watch than Fitch either, he just doesn't get booed because he usually fights in Canada.

Once Spider Retires.. Treestump will reign with jitz alone for awhile..He'll be the last of the one dimensional champs.
JDS is blackhouse and though he has cleaned everyone's clock with Marquess of Queensberry pugilism, I still suspect we may see a sub one day..so I wont stereotype playboy just yet. Perhaps I love Gypsy too much to call him one dimensional..even if he is.
