How many actually train MMA?

Postby Doughboy » Tue Nov 13, 2007 12:41 am

How many of you actually train in MMA or any martial art? If so what and for how long? What belt do you have? Do you hold any titles? Be specific. Just wondering how many are new to martial arts and how many already had interest.

Here is what I've trained:

*Kempo Karate - 1 year green belt (didn't like karate)
*Kung Fu - 1/2 year, white belt with 2 yellow stripes
*Judo 2 years (no belts, studied with a black belt at his home gym)
*Taekwondo - my first martial art, stuck with it for 8 years. Achieved my black belt
*Brazilian JuJitsu- (most recent) 2 years blue belt. Plan to reach my black belt.

Have been doing martial arts since I was 8 and have also studied many other arts freely. Took first place in a few local Fox Valley open style karate tournaments (a few in sparring, others in forms/weapons demonstration) but not much other competition. Plan to be competing in MMA next summer. In my study I found BJJ too be the most practical self defense.

I am a total gym hopper and can't stay at any one gym for more than a year because of moving or money issues. Now I am a big fan of training through my schools university martial arts program.

Before college I trained in Muay Thai for about 8 years in different cities. In college went through all of the classes to really get introduced to each. Some semesters I would train in different clubs.

Muay Thai- 8 years, now my knees hurt.
Judo- green belt, I am still training now after a year and love it.
Hapkido- just started this semester
Kung Fu northern style - 1 year
Aikido- green belt, not so interested as much anymore
No Gi Grappling- 3 years with various clubs

Next semester I am trying Wing Chun because the guys at my school club have some good skills.

Well if you do decide to train don't stick to just one school. Take JuJitsu and some striking classes. I recommend kickboxing like Muay Thia or something like that. Find what suites you. Everybody has their own strength and weaknesses and some times you gotta find them out the hard way.

I've trained in martial arts for about 15 years.

2nd Dan Black Belt in Tang Soo Do

3rd Dan BB in Hap Ki Do

Now i mostly train alone, but done with traditional martiial arts. I'm taking some BJJ in beginning of '08. Not specifically training for MMA competitions, but most of what i do is MMA geared. My training mostly consist of techniques that are practical. With the arts above i'd just be mostly a kicker, so i practice striking with my hands equally.

I've done a few tournaments around my area in the past and fought in some state championships. I rarely lost, but basically nothing fancy.

Sorry, for those who don't know, 'dan' in korean martial arts means degree.

You stated Kung Fu sucks in another post what form of Kung Fu did you study

Kobra Ki Kung Fu and I didn't mean it like that. Just saying alone Kung Fu isn't the most effective. Did not study for long cause I didn't like it.
