I'm not entirely sure who supposedly found that out, and it may be true. But people get "knocked out" from trauma to the brain. Hitting the jaw causes the brain to shake violently for half a second. It's actually more effective than hitting the head itself, besides maybe the temples. My guess is that since the brain is the most important part of the human body and evolution has seen fit to protect it, you'd have to attack a less obvious area to cause a significant damage. The nerve thing may be the activation method, who knows?

I have heard about the nerve thing too. From what I gather, there is a grouping of nerves, the trigeminal nerve system that gets pinched when your jaw shifts from the punch. Basically, when the group of nerves gets pinched, it overloads the nervous system, which then shuts down. Essentially, you reboot...![]()

That is why it is dangerous for fighters to breath through their mouth. Not having your teeth together makes it easier to shift the jaw, since there is no tension in the muscles. Having the jaw clenched allows the impact of the punch to dissipate through the entire head/neck area instead of snapping the loose jaw off to the side.
Also, there are concussive knockouts with the brain sloshing and what not.
