Dana White Talks J. Jones DWI, Thinks Pressure Got To Him

More comments from White in the full story, but this is what he had to say when he was asked if he thinks the pressure surrounding Jon Jones finally got to him and forced him to make a stupid decision.

The pressure gets to everybody man, it’s tough. Especially for these younger guys. You know, when you come into money and fame and all the things that come. There’s just so many – the worst part of any of this is the cling-ons, you know? The cling-ons are the ones who come out and crawl out from under the rocks and all these creepy places and start trying to attach themselves to you and tell you what they can do for you, what they can get. You can do this and that. Then you’re 24-years-old, now all of a sudden all the girls notice you. How you can walk into any club you want, any restaurant, all these things. The whole world changes, man. It’s very overwhelming and it’s going to be one of the challenges, that, not just Jon Jones, but all the new champions that we bring up over the next several years. It’s tough man, it’s a tough thing to manage.”

Dana tried to justify it with "cling-ons" and getting into any club for free - ie. people liking you or wanting you around. Your explanation is more on the lines of how he thinks.

A lot of people hate on Jones for his 'false humility', and it may be somewhat justified. Of course he is under enormous pressure and every little thing he does is going to be scrutinized unmercifully. The guy wants to be a role model so he needs to be mindful of how he acts when nobody is around, because a little mistake (or a big one) can quickly lead to a lot of people knowing what happened and then more pressure results instead of less.

This may be a good thing for Jones...he learns to be more careful in how he chooses the people with whom he associates.

You tried to justify your remark by referring to another quote (in the OP)...rather than acknowledging that what you said wasn't justifiable. Either that or you're just trolling (wouldn't that be a shocker?).

Um, I was referring to Dana's explanation and saying it was bullshit. "Everyone likes him; it got to his head" is a bullshit argument because tons of people hate him, lol. I actually agree with Mikal's assessment of things.

I have no symapthy for Jones. As far as I can tell he isn't an alcoholic and isn't dealing with any deep personal problems, so there's isn't really "pressure" I can imagine. For someone who has in such a short time become larger than life, at least within his own sport, I don't see how much pressure there could honestly be. Pressure to perform? Maybe, but I'd imagine he'd deal with that in training and in the cage. But other than that, what kind of pressure is there in being a superstar athlete? Pressure to go partying and getting drunk? There is no pressure there. Jon Jones doesn't have to be in the spotlight outside the cage if he doesn't want to. He doesn't have to go to clubs, he doesn't have to become this overly social figure. He has media obligations and all, but once he's out of the cage and out of the gym, he lives his life the way he decides. He chose to go get drunk and he chose to drive while intoxicated. In the end, he's a grown man and he's responsible for his own decisions.
