Alcohol and training

Postby gilmorke » Sat Aug 02, 2008 11:00 pm

I am a college student and am pretty into fitness. I consume alcohol often(probably 3-4 nights a week)and have a tiny little beer belly over my abs(I wouldnt even call it a beer belly. Is it true that liquor is actually better for you as far as not getting fat? What I am trying to get at is what should I drink if I am trying to balance the two lol. I am going to drink through the rest of college most likely so am I screwed no matter what I drink?

Alcohol is poison, so it slows down the muscles' healing process. Alcohol is indeed bad, mmk?

I fully agree with the above statements. Alcohol on occassion isn't that bad but not the intake rate you're talking about. Cut down on the alcohol whilst training...

most people mix liquor into girl drinks that have a ton of sugar (or fructose, which is worse since the conversion of fructose is one of the limiting steps in converting sugars to fats). A beer belly as I would consider it is from an enlarged liver after years of drinking abuse, otherwise I just consider it fat.

3-4 nights a week is alot, even if it's every other night, and spread out evenly over the week, alcohol stays in your system for 48 hours, it also slows down your metabolism, so if you need to make weight it's very bad.

I hear ya man. A little side note, beer has no fats in it. You don't get fat from drinking beer. You get fat if you eat within about two hours before binge drinking. And those late night drunken snacks make it worse. You should lower your nights of drinking though... all though i shouldn't be talkin haha

When my skills advance to a level where I think I am ready to compete then I will cut the drinking out of my lifestyle, but as for now I do not think that it is having too much of an effect on my training. Except for when I do not go to Muay Thai or BJJ class due to a hangover like Saturday morning. :(.

Could you maybe just go out on Saturday night of something?

Ya I usually try and keep the drinking only on Friday/Saturday nights, and Sunday during the day.

Beer has a lot of calories and carbs in it. Carbs that aren't burned will be stored as body fat. That's why you gain weight from drinking a lot. You're definitely correct when it comes to late night drunken snacks though.

I was talking to my coach today, and being in fighting condition is really about sacrifice and a way of life. You can't be in the middle, it's really do or don't.

Yup, I feel quilty when I drink after working out. I know it's only hurting me and I can barely enjoy my beer.
